Africa, 17th to 19th century. Forged iron mace of slender tapering form, with a long shaft, and faceted upper knop with shaped finial. The handle is cast in a heavy brass or complex bronze with linear details faceted sides, and roped upper section. It is also peened at the pommel like European swords.

Objects of this type could function for ceremonial purposes although the shape and construction of this mace suggests it once functioned as a powerful weapon.

Shows age, oxidation, pitting, surface encrustation, rubbing, and wear throughout. Some bending and irregularity to shaft and terminals, consistent with age and use.
