Description
Historically significant 19th-century oil painting on Baltimore pine panel is attributed to early American portraitist Joseph Wood, complete with printed provenance text to the reverse. Executed in 1818 with masterful classical technique, the finely rendered work depicts a distinguished young gentleman in formal attire, bearing striking stylistic similarities to the artist's portrait of Mendes Cohen housed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Joseph Wood was celebrated for his meticulous miniature and cabinet-sized portraits documenting prominent American figures of the Federal era. The artwork is housed in a period complementary gilt wood frame measuring approximately 11 1/8 in. H x 9 1/2 in. W x 1 1/4 in. D overall. It is offered with extensive wear, loss to image, a great deal of craquelure to varnish and paint, wear to frame, would benefit from careful restoration and cleaning.
