Dal Burtchaell Face Jug

Description

Striking southern folk art face jug was crafted by accomplished Gillsville, Georgia potter Dal Burtchaell, continuing the rich sculptural traditions of White County. The figural devil form features modeled horns, prominent ears, applied loop handles, and a pouting facial expression framed by downcast, arched textured brows and a sumptuous mouth accented by a fuzzy textured goatee. The vessel is finished in an unglazed, novel bisque-fired finish that highlights the raw, earthy qualities of the clay body. It measures approximately 13 7/8 in. H x 7 1/2 in. in diameter overall and bears the artist's incised signature on the underside. It shows one brake to horn.
