Description
Japanese late Edo to Meiji-period hanging scroll (kakejiku), attributed to Yamamoto Baioku (????, b. 1822), Nanga painter and adopted son of noted Nanga master Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783–1856). Ink and wash on paper depicting a secluded mountain village nestled among towering peaks, trees, and a winding stream. Inscribed with verses from the Ming poet Liu Qiu’s Mountain Dwelling (Shanju): ?????????????????????????. Signed Baioku (??) and bearing two red seals. Mounted with blue and gold patterned silk brocade borders. Baioku is recorded as a Southern School/Nanga painter and published the Baioku Gafu in 1865. Measures approximately 81 in. H x 24 in. W overall. Condition commensurate with age, including toning, creasing, scattered staining, and surface wear; mounting with additional age-related wear and loose roller handles. Attribution based upon signature, seals, inscription, and stylistic characteristics; not independently authenticated.
