Description
Japanese Edo-period hanging scroll (kakejiku) bearing waka calligraphy attributed to Reizei Tamenori (????, 1777–1848) prominent court noble, poet, and head of the Upper Reizei family, descendants of the celebrated poetic tradition of Fujiwara no Teika. Executed in ink on decorated paper, the calligraphic composition is arranged beneath a blue cloud-like band and mounted within pale green patterned silk brocade with dark brocade borders. Accompanied by an inscribed protective storage case identifying Reizei Tamenori and his court rank or title. Japan, Edo period, first half of the 19th century. Measures approximately 55 in. H x 24 1/2 in. W. Overall toning, horizontal creasing, scattered staining, and age-related wear to the paper; mounting exhibits minor discoloration and wear consistent with age.
