A lacquered hat box and a photograph
Early 20th century
Hat box appears to be for a Chinese official's hat. Signature on back of photograph frame indicates that this is a photo of the family of Prince Su, the Manchu prince who refused to accept the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1912, fled to Port Arthur (under Japanese control at that time), and remained there until his death in 1922. Per the inscription on the back, the photograph is of several of Prince Su's consors and advisors with several consorts and advisors, as well as a Madame Kawashima, presumably the wife of Kawashima Naniwa, who adopted Prince Su's fourteenth daughter Kawashima Yoshiko, one of Japan's most notorious spies in Manchuria during World War II.
