A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF VAJRADHARA TIBET, 17TH CENTURY With traces of gilding. Himalayan Art Resources item no. 207042 15 cm (5 7/8 in.) high Footnotes: 西藏 十七世紀 銅鎏金金剛總持像 Provenance John and Karina Stewart Collection, since c. 2003 Vajradhara, the primordial Buddha and embodiment of ultimate enlightenment, is seated in vajraparyankasana with his hands crossed before his chest in vajrahumkara mudra, originally holding a vajra and ghanta, symbolizing the union of wisdom and compassion. The figure is adorned with elaborate beaded necklaces, floral earrings, armlets, and a five-leaf crown framing a serene face with downcast eyes and a gentle smile. A finely worked aureole surrounds the head, while the slender torso and softly modeled shoulders contrast with the broad, rounded legs. The lower garment is decorated with finely incised scrolling motifs along its borders, with a central pleated fold extending between the crossed ankles. For a stylistically related example, see a gilt bronze figure of a bodhisattva sold at Christie's, London, 7 November 2012, lot 730.
