Description
Audubon Bien Edition, John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851), "White-Headed Eagle with Yellow Catfish", Plate 31 from Birds of America, No. 7. Chromolithography by Julius Bien (American, 1826-1909), published in New York in 1860 by Roe Lockwood & Son. Print depicts an American Bald Eagle resting on a rocky outcrop with a fish in its claws, with a mountainside lake in the background with a sailboat. Inscribed below image lower left "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S.E.L.S.", lower center "White headed Eagle, Falco Leucocephalus, Linn, Mate, Yellow Cat Fish", and lower right "Chromolithy by J. Bien, New York, 1860". Framed 41.5" x 54.7". Plate size 24.8" x 37.4".
Note: "The Bien Edition": In 1858, John James Audubon's youngest son, John Woodhouse Audubon, created the first American full sized reissue of his father's original "Birds of America" which were dated 1826-1838. This edition's lithography was done by Julius Bien.
Condition
Foxing to sheet, mat burn visible. Corners rounded from handling, losses to upper left corner. Darker thumb or finger prints visible in margins, predominately on right side. Fourteen holes at top from earlier mounting. Four tears visible, two at top, one upper left, the other at right. Wear to top edge with jagged surface, losses and rippling.
