Description
North America, United States, ca. 1853 CE. A nice Model 1842 percussion pistol with a steel barrel secured to the wooden forestock with a single brass ring strap. Beneath the muzzle-loading barrel is a hinged ram rod used for loading ammunition and packing black powder. The trigger is housed within a brass trigger guard, and the percussion hammer falls when the trigger is pulled. The curved back stock is smooth to the touch and is adorned with a brass butt cap. A crucifix and a large X are engraved beneath the forestock. Beneath the inscribed "U.S." on the lock plate is a name reading "I.N. Johnson," and a maker's mark behind the hammer reads "MIDDtn CONN, 1853." Size: 15.25" L x 5.875" H (38.7 cm x 1.5 cm x 14.9 cm); (bore): 0.6" W (1.5 cm).

Condition
Trigger guard and swiveling ram rod hinge reattached to pistol. Ram rod cannot be inserted into barrel due to hinge being reattached backwards. Abrasions to wooden stock, barrel, and brass components, with light encrustations along steel components. Nice patina throughout. Hammer articulates but does not cock back fully and trigger is inoperable. Pistol has not been tested for firing functionality.
