TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Affiliated Auctions and Realty, LLC landed “the historical object of a lifetime” when the bell of the Santa Maria arrived at their auction house last month. The naval bell reportedly was aboard the largest of Christopher Columbus’ fleet of ships used during his first voyage of discovery and new lands in 1492. The auction house will offer the bell for public sale on Wednesday, March 2. Its estimate is $2.5 million-$5 million. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

NEW YORK — Dorothy Lichtenstein, widow of Roy Lichtenstein, and Adam D. Weinberg, Alice Pratt Brown Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, have announced that the Lichtenstein family has promised to donate the late artist’s studio building to the museum. The Whitney, which since moving downtown in 2015 has been a neighbor of the studio, operating four blocks north on Gansevoort Street, will adapt the space to serve as the first permanent home of its widely influential Independent Study Program, which was founded in 1968.

CHICAGO – An extraordinary surreal Gertrude Abercrombie painting set a new world auction record for the artist at Hindman Auctions on February 17 when it sold for $387,500. The 1964 oil on panel, entitled The Dinosaur, was the highlight of Hindman’s Somewhere Out There auction, which featured incredible one-of-a-kind artworks from the more “out there” regions of the imagination. Led by the Abercrombie piece, the auction achieved a total of $970,656, nearly tripling its presale estimate.
