WILTON, Conn. — Historical document experts University Archives returns with another collection of significant, signed items in its Rare Autographs, Manuscripts, Books & Sports sale on Wednesday, October 18. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale is grouped by category, leading off with American presidents and first ladies. Interestingly, one of the top lots in the sale is a multi-page letter from First Lady Martha Washington (1731-1802) to her niece Fanny Bassett, discussing recent and upcoming travel plans. As noted by University Auctions, “Letters by Martha Washington are extremely rare. Only a very few survive today in the private sector. Even more scarce are the examples which mention her husband, which our first First Lady does three times in this letter.” Silked and with minor paper loss, the artifact is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Albert Einstein (1879-1955)-signed correspondence is always popular at auction, and this sale includes a relatively uncommon letter written in English (most are in German). In this letter, Einstein discusses his theories in relation to his predecessor Johannes Kepler (1571-1630). In fine condition, the letter is estimated at $25,000-$35,000.

Peter Stuyvesant (1592-1672) served as the final Dutch Director-General of the New Netherland colony, today known as New York. In this document, he grants approximately 10,000 square feet of sheep pasture to Cornelis van Ruijven. At the time, the colony was located in what is now lower Manhattan, and was protected by a wall to prevent recurring raids on the populace. The wall safeguarded the settlers but also severely limited the amount of available land. Stuyvesant’s grant could be considered incredibly generous, given the time and circumstances. Fully authenticated and documented in numerous historical books, the grant is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Though largely forgotten today, Jewish financier Haym Salomon was one of a handful of Americans who helped the young Republic survive raging inflation in the immediate postwar period by loaning money and offering guarantees to the nascent government. His signature is considered exceedingly rare, with University Archives noting fewer than 10 examples exist. This check made out to Salomon and endorsed by him is estimated at $18,000-$20,000.

PARIS — Founded in 1990, Annmaris Auctions is a Finnish auction house specializing in Nordic home furnishings. On September 13, Annmaris partnered with Paris-based Piasa to present a compelling 174-lot collection of home furnishings that reflect the Nordic design ethos. The complete sale results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898-1976) was a prominent Finnish architect and designer. His furniture remains very collectible to this day, and it looks extraordinarily contemporary despite being designed decades ago. An Alvar Aalto model no. 44 set of armchairs originally designed in 1932 were estimated at €25,000-€35,000 ($26,500-$37,100), but ultimately hammered at €65,000 ($69,274, or $90,056 with buyer’s premium).

Another Alvar Aalto lot of note was a model no. 41 armchair with a design also dating to 1932 that could easily fit into any setting today. Named the Paimio, it was estimated at €20,000-€30,000 but soared to €28,000 ($29,841, or $38,793 with buyer’s premium).

Paavo Tynell was one of the most important designers of light fixtures in the 20th century. Based in Finland, Tynell’s designs were copied worldwide, so great was his influence. Two of his light fixtures sold above their estimates: a 1946-design table lamp for €57,000 ($60,748 or $78,972 with buyer’s premium), and a pair of model no. 5762 Chinese Hat floor lamps for €38,000 ($40,499 or $52,648 with buyer’s premium).

BERKELEY, Calif. — Signed Ansel Adams items, a Walt Disney-signed Mickey Mouse illustration and other fine art and motion picture artifacts share the spotlight at PBA Galleries’ Photography, Fine Art & Movie Posters on Thursday, October 19. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The wide-ranging sale encompasses 389 lots and reflects a composite of collections and collecting passions. The 17 lots associated with Ansel Adams (1902-1984), for example, reflect a focus on both signatures as well as the background of one of America’s pioneering photographers, with numerous reference books included. An Alan Ross print of Ansel Adams’ Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite, CA, 1960, unsigned, is the top lot of the category, with an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

Another photographic force included in the sale is Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946). Though he had a varied and fascinating life, including being married to artist Georgia O’Keeffe, his early work in photography showed what the medium could be capable of. A series of 1911 photogravures from the New York waterfront, including this one, titled Excavating, estimated at $2,500-$3,500, offers a glimpse at a time in history that is almost forgotten.

Walt Disney original signatures are highly valued, even if they appear on drawings of his famed characters which he did not personally render. This pen, ink and watercolor drawing features a staff-drawn image of a 1950s Mickey Mouse with a personal inscription “from Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney.” It is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

Looking like an angel from on high, silent movie star Mary Pickford’s wedding portrait in her full gown, taken by Adolph de Meyer in 1920, is another gem in the sale catalog. Measuring 9.5 by 7.5in, this original print is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

NEW YORK – On Wednesday, October 18, starting at 8 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will present an unusual showcase sale titled Minimal Architecture Photography. Every single one of its 130 lots is a photographic work by the contemporary Dutch artist Chris Fraikin (b. 1958-), and every single one is estimated at $100-$120. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The landing page for the auction states in part: Chris Fraikin (b. 1958-) is a contemporary art photographer from the Netherlands who was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. His photographs show how simple compositions can be really effective in drawing viewers’ attention instantly. In 2016, he was chosen as one of the 100 most promising new art photographers in the Netherlands. His work has been exhibited at venues in the Netherlands (Gouda, Vroomshoop, Amsterdam) as well as the United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, India, and also Portland, Oregon. In addition, Fraikin has been represented at Art Weeks held in Miami and New York, and he has received the Minimalist Photography Award.

The chosen highlights – Wateringen VII, Zoetermeer XXXIV, and Zoetermeer LIV – demonstrate how ably and how well Fraikin finds and coaxes forth works of abstract art lurking in the facades and the shapes of buildings.

Bid Smart: Wolf Kahn’s riotous landscapes bewitch collectors

NEW YORK — The electric and dramatic colors in the paintings of Wolf Kahn (1927-2020) transformed average-looking fields and forests into otherworldly spectacles, surprising the viewers “without being offensive,” according to the artist himself.

Born in Germany and emigrating to the United States as a youth, Kahn mainly worked in pastels and oils and is now celebrated for his distinctive and compelling landscapes. Having studied under Hans Hofmann and later worked as his studio assistant, he came to painting from the standpoint of monochromatism and abstraction, explained Pauline Archambault, an American art specialist at Hindman in Chicago. “During the 1960s, after the advent of Abstract Expressionism, Kahn recalibrated his palette to vibrant colors and his canvases to colorful landscapes, recognizable as such, but veering into the abstract. His aesthetic is best defined as an interplay between figuration and color fields, whereby the pictorial veers into abstraction in subtle but unmistakable ways.”

Khan’s signature subject matter — landscapes — was focused on New England, especially the features of Vermont, where he lived and painted for decades. “His trademark subject, that of the landscape – typically a row of trees, the edge of a forest, sometimes featuring a cabin or house – stands in this liminal space between realistic and blurry representation,” Archambault said. “The contours are soft, the elements of the landscape blend into each other, and from that emanates an emphasis on texture and pure color, through vibrant polychromatic arrangements.”

She noted that “both in the lineage of and in reaction to the ethos of pure abstraction that defined the mid-20th century, Kahn subsequently reinvented the traditional subject of the landscape, opening it to new ways of painting and seeing, but also recasting it as the locus where creative and aesthetic innovations are possible.”

Wolf Kahn’s ‘Against Near Hills, Evening’ is among his most brilliantly colored paintings. Dating to 1991, it achieved $150,000 plus the buyer’s premium in November 2021. Image courtesy of Swann Auction Galleries and LiveAuctioneers.

Works such as Against Near Hills, Evening, in which forests are rainbow-fuschia instead of green and the grass is a dreamlike shade of seafoam-aqua, are among those that greatly appeal to collectors. This 1991 oil on canvas tripled its high estimate in November 2021 when it attained $150,000 plus the buyer’s premium at Swann Auction Galleries.

Archambault said collectors gravitate towards the dramatic qualities of Kahn’s work, which can be hard to pin down, but involve his peculiar use of color. “The color is never exactly realistic, especially where Kahn put[s] it in his painting. For example, a painting may unmistakably depict the edge of a forest, but the sky is of an intense purple hue, suggesting an impending change in the weather, or perhaps an unlikely time of day, or something else entirely,” she said. “There is a level of unease, whereby the work draws attention to its own artificiality while also releasing an evocative feel. The colors look jarring initially, sometimes imperceptibly so, but they imbue the landscape with calm and serenity. It is this dichotomy, this formal tour de force, that draws viewers in and makes Kahn’s works so fascinating.”

Kahn shows his mastery of color — knowing exactly how far to go but no further — in paintings such as A Grove Against a Hillside, a 1994 oil painting that attained $95,000 plus the buyer’s premium in July 2021 at Mark Lawson Antiques, Inc.

The secondary market for the artist hit a high around 2020, shortly after Kahn’s death from congestive heart failure at the age of 92; some collectors who had hung onto his paintings for years decided the time was right to sell. Many Kahn pieces became available then, as is typical when a major artist passes. The market for his work eventually settled back down, but it remains strong. “While his passing may certainly have factored in, with renewed attention to his legacy, it is also important to underline that his work corresponds to the taste that currently predominates among buyers, who are drawn precisely to what Kahn’s paintings have to offer: colorful, soft, modern,” Archambault said. “The market still appears strong in 2023, with top prices achieved for landscapes featuring trees, including six-figure prices for the most sizable examples.”

Among those strong prices are two paintings that Hindman sold in 2022 that are emblematic of Kahn’s aesthetic, having “vibrant color, nearing but not quite reaching abstraction, modernist softness, and a self-reflexive quality of the work bringing attention to its own texture and visual construction,” according to Archambault. One of these works was Against a Dark Blue Sky II, a 1998 oil on canvas that easily outperformed its high estimate when it sold for $90,000 plus the buyer’s premium in May 2022 at Hindman. In the same auction, Hindman offered an untitled Kahn painting from 1993 practically sizzled with bright colors, with yellow-orange trees topping a fuschia undergrowth in the forest. That painting took $50,000 plus the buyer’s premium.

Kahn arguably comes closest to approaching abstraction in an ethereal yet electric painting with a similar composition to that of Against a Dark Blue Sky II. In this work, titled Overall Green, his luminescent lime greens and cool pinks enliven a familiar forest scene, keeping the viewer engaged and also perhaps a little off-balance. The painting made $75,000 plus the buyer’s premium in November 2020 at Freeman’s. “Trees and mountains, skies and fields are nearly always recognizable, but are often reduced to bands of color that play off one another in a way that approaches abstraction.” according to the catalog description.

Many of Kahn’s paintings reflect no evidence of human beings or their existence, but a fine landscape from 1976, Looking Down to the Woodshed, has a rustic shed in the foreground. It sold for $75,000 plus the buyer’s premium in December 2022 at Palm Beach Modern Auctions.

Kahn’s work deftly straddles the line between abstract and representational art. His New England landscapes are clearly distinguishable, and his carefully organized arrangements of bands of color and light compel the viewer to dig deep into each atmospheric scene and all its nuances.
