NEWBURY, UK — As one of the most prominent decorators of the modern era, Robert Kime (1946-2022) brought distinctive taste and style to every home he embraced, including six properties for King Charles III. Known as the decorator to English royalty, Kime and his unique esthetic sensibility led him to become one of the best-known decorators in the world.

Kime’s vast collection, assembled from his many travels, reflects his own personal taste in design and decor and encapsulate many contrasting cultural traditions and media.

Dreweatts Donnington Priory will bring Kime’s collection to market, resulting in a monumental three-day sale from Wednesday, October 4 through Friday, October 6, featuring more than 900 lots of fine art, furnishings and historic items. (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3)

One of the top lots in the sale is New Year Snow, a watercolor and pencil work from 1938 by Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). Kime purchased it at Christie’s in June 2003 at the sale of the late Sir Duncan Oppenheim’s collection. It is estimated at £100,000-£150,000 ($125,000-$187,500).

Kime’s collection includes a tremendous variety of books, both historic and contemporary. This Bible with an embroidered binding, containing both the New Testament and The Whole Booke of Davids Psalmes, dates to the 1620s-30s and carries an estimate of £1,000-£1,500 ($1,250-$1,875).

Irish artist William Crozier (1930-2011) was a friend of Kime’s, often visiting the decorator at Kime’s French retreat, which was known as La Gonette. The Garden at La Gonette; The Orchard at La Gonette, estimated at £6,000-£10,000, or $7,500-$12,500, has an interesting history.

On his first visit to La Gonette in 2001, Crozier was intrigued by the earthen pigments used in house painting in the area. He purchased powdered pigments from a local paint factory, and this work, along with others in the sale, were created using those same pigments.

NEWBURY, U.K. – Dreweatts Donnington Priory will auction the personal collection of Robert Kime (1946-2022), the man known across the world as a titan of design and a polymath who was dubbed the ‘great assembler’ of beautiful things. Kime’s unique eye and aesthetic sensibility led him to become a leading interior design figure. The culmination of his lifetime of collecting will form a three-day auction at Dreweatts titled Robert Kime: The Personal Collection, which will take place on October 4-6 and will comprise more than 750 lots ranging in value from £30 to £100,000 ($38 to $127,700). It is expected to achieve in excess of £1.5 million (roughly $1.9 million).

NEWBURY, U.K. – In its Wednesday, June 14 Old Master, British and European Art sale, Dreweatts Donnington Priory will offer a study for the legendary Perseus series by one of the most famous British Pre-Raphaelite artists, Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898), commissioned by British Prime Minister Arthur Balfour (1848-1930) in 1875 for the music room of his London home at 4 Carlton Gardens in St James’s. Cloisonne pomegranate box should bear fruit at Dreweatts, May 17-18

Ming dynasty-era cloisonne pomegranate box and cover, estimated at £6,000-£10,000.

NEWBURY, U.K. – An exceptionally rare Chinese cloisonne pomegranate box and cover from the Ming period, discovered in a dust-filled cabinet in the attic of a family home, where it had been stored and left untouched since the owner’s death in 1967, will be offered at Dreweatts Donnington Priory‘s Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art auction on Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18. This important box bearing the incised six-character marks of Xuande, the fifth Emperor of the Ming dynasty (1426-1435), was nestled in a cabinet among other cloisonne pieces, and it was only on close inspection many years later that it was found. It is estimated at £6,000–£10,000.

NEWBURY, U.K. – Dreweatts will offer the contents of Chateau de Lasfonds in France for auction on behalf of an international collector on Wednesday, November 16. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers. The collection has been carefully curated during the last 30 years and one of the themes of the collection is travel. Among a spectacular selection of artworks is an important group of works in the Anglo-Indian tradition by Thomas and William Daniell, the uncle and nephew duo celebrated for their scenes produced on their tour of India between 1786 and 1794.

LONDON – Dreweatts auctioneers will offer the public a peek at spectacular historic works from country homes across the UK by way of a loan exhibition of works at its London venue. The historical items will be loaned by members of the Historic Houses Association, which this year in conjunction with Dreweatts have created a new award for historic collections. Country House Treasures: An Exhibition of Loans in Partnership with Historic Houses brings together objects collected during the centuries and from across the globe, which are now housed in Britain’s historic homes. The artifacts have become a part of the UK’s national heritage and each has its own story to tell. The exhibition will run from July 11-13.

LONDON – Dreweatts’ Thursday, July 7 sale will feature a collection of works by Gerald Benney (1930-2008), the most important designer in the revival of British silversmithing in post-World War II Britain. Born in Hull, East Yorkshire in 1930, Benney’s career lasted more than half a century, and in 1995, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to art, due to his unique style and the exceptional quality and finish of his pieces. The Benney works will be offered as a highlight of Dreweatts’ auction of Fine Jewellery, Silver, Watches and Luxury Accessories. LONDON – A recently discovered work by esteemed French 19th-century painter Jean Victor Louis Faure (1786-1879) stole the spotlight in Dreweatts Old Master, British and European Art sale on May 26 when it sold for £200,000 (about $252,000) – more than six times its low estimate of £30,000. The painting had been discovered in a family home in Norfolk, where it hung unnoticed for 60 years.

LONDON – A decorative portion of a historic silk panel, commissioned to hang in Westminster Abbey for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953, will be auctioned at Dreweatts during its Fine Furniture sale, scheduled for Monday, May 30 and Tuesday, May 31. The specially-woven panel was hung as a glorious backdrop, with a range of others, to set the scene for the special ceremony and is visible in many photographs of the coronation.
