WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The final liquidation to satisfy creditors of the historic Ace Gallery in Los Angeles returned good results for 360Bid, the auction arm of ThreeSixty Asset Advisors, on September 12. The complete sale results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Founded by dealer Douglas Chrismas in the 1960s, Ace Galleries helped propel the careers of Postmodernists such as Carl Andre and Donald Judd, but closed in 2013 amid mounting scandals. Buried under mounting legal challenges, Chrismas was ordered by a California judge to repay $14.2 million to creditors.

The sale’s top seller was a work by James Hayward (b. 1943-), who is best known for his focus on the monochromatic in abstract painting. His oil and wax on canvas and board Spartan Thalo Green brought $9,600 ($12,480 with buyer’s premium).

Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) is considered something of a father to the 1960s Pop Art movement. His acrylic on lithograph Snowflake Crime XIX shows the artist’s talent in combining disparate elements to create a unified piece. It sold for $5,600 ($7,280 with buyer’s premium).

Actor Dennis Hopper’s art career took many forms across the years. The sale’s sole example of his work, Venice (Collage, “AAZ”), is dated 1995 and hammered for $3,350 ($4,335 with buyer’s premium).

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Princess Diana and Dennis Hopper items brought enormous star power to Julien’s Auctions September 6-8, with royalty-worn gowns, art and more delivering for consignors at its Legends: Hollywood and Royalty sale.

Three gowns worn publicly by the late British royal brought staggering sums. Princess Diana’s scarlet metallic jacquard chiffon gown, designed by Bruce Oldfield, was first worn in 1989 and was last seen in 1991 at the London world premiere of Hot Shots starring Charlie Sheen. It hammered at $450,000 ($585,000 with buyer’s premium), topping its estimate of $200,000-$400,000.

Estimated at $100,000-$200,000, a Catherine Walker bi-color gown worn by Princess Diana at a Toronto gala dinner on October 26, 1991, soared to $450,000 ($585,000 with buyer’s premium). Another Catherine Walker gown in ivory silk crepe and black silk velvet, worn by Princess Diana to a private event, hammered at $400,000 ($520,000 with buyer’s premium).

Audrey Hepburn’s screen-worn haute couture evening dress designed by Hubert Givenchy demanded the spotlight, selling for $350,000 ($455,000 with buyer’s premium). The instantly recognizable gown from Blake Edwards’s classic 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s topped its estimate of $200,000-$300,000.

A man of many talents and interests, Dennis Hopper (1936-2010) was at the forefront of the worlds of film and art. An avid painter and collector, Hopper helped the nascent careers of people such as Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha long before their stardom, and artifacts from his estate reflect his long-standing friendships with them.

A collection of items associated with filmmaker and collage artist Wallace Berman (1926-1976) carried a modest estimate of $500-$700, but furious bidding between the floor and internet participants drove the group to $12,500 ($16,250 with buyer’s premium).

A Nudie tuxedo jacket, worn by Hopper to the 42nd Academy Awards where his 1969 film Easy Rider was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, with Jack Nicholson nominated for Best Supporting Actor, sold for $7,500 ($9,750 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $1,000-$2,000. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — With more than 300 items from the estate of Dennis Hopper, the upcoming Julien’s Auctions sale Legends: Hollywood & Royalty has a stunning array of artwork and artifacts uncovered at the El Cortez Theater in Taos, New Mexico. The three-day sale runs from Wednesday, September 6 through Friday, September 8 on LiveAuctioneers.

This Polaroid features a circa-1977 image of Hopper, taken by his longtime friend Andy Warhol. Hopper helped promote and build Warhol’s visibility in the American art world from the early 1960s. This is one of the few Polaroids taken by Warhol that is actually signed by him.

Estimated at $20,000 to $30,000, the Hopper-Warhol Polaroid is the star lot from the Dennis Hopper collection at Julien’s.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Dennis Hopper was a well-known patron of the arts, and one of his earliest friendships was with groundbreaking artist Ed Ruscha. Some Los Angeles Apartments, originally published in 1965, was a gift to Hopper from the artist, with the following inscription: “For Dennis / & Brooke / Ed Ruscha / Dec. 1965.” Its estimate is $15,000-$20,000.

Some Los Angeles Apartments is one of 16 artist books produced by Ruscha, who was a prominent early influence on the genre’s development and American artist book culture in general. Some might argue his Twentysix Gasoline Stations was the first modern artist book.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Though well known as a patron and promoter of many avant-garde artists in the 1960s, Dennis Hopper was also an artist, photographer, writer and of course an actor and director in his own right. This untitled work from 1960 is the earliest known surviving piece by Dennis Hopper, part of Julien Auctions‘ Legends: Hollywood & Royalty sale on Friday, September 8, with bidding available via LiveAuctioneers.

The painting is an abstract impressionistic portrait of a face in shades of brown, green, orange, red and yellow. Hopper wrote his name in the lower right. It has an estimate of $6,000-$8,000.

Hopper was also considered a talented painter, whose paintings were exhibited in galleries around the world. He developed an appreciation for the art form and began to paint as a young boy. Shortly before the Bel Air Fire of 1961 burned his house down and destroyed all of his early paintings and photographs, he sent this portrait to his brother David as a gift.

This GAF Anscomatic hand-held super 8 camera, circa 1970-71, is a featured lot at Julien Auctions‘ Legends: Hollywood & Royalty event on Friday, September 8, with bidding available via LiveAuctioneers.

The camera is untested and shows signs of wear. It is a GAF model ST/110, and it is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

The poster was found in one of Hopper’s Taos, New Mexico properties, the Mabel Dodge Luhan house. In the 1971 film The American Dreamer, this 39.5 by 27.5in poster can be seen affixed to a refrigerator in a scene.

After production, it was removed and given a linen backing to preserve it. It appears in the Julien’s auction with an estimate of $800-$1,200.
