BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — With more than 300 items from the estate of Dennis Hopper, the upcoming Julien’s Auctions sale Legends: Hollywood & Royalty has a stunning array of artwork and artifacts uncovered at the El Cortez Theater in Taos, New Mexico. The three-day sale runs from Wednesday, September 6 through Friday, September 8 on LiveAuctioneers.

This Polaroid features a circa-1977 image of Hopper, taken by his longtime friend Andy Warhol. Hopper helped promote and build Warhol’s visibility in the American art world from the early 1960s. This is one of the few Polaroids taken by Warhol that is actually signed by him.

Estimated at $20,000 to $30,000, the Hopper-Warhol Polaroid is the star lot from the Dennis Hopper collection at Julien’s.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Dennis Hopper was a well-known patron of the arts, and one of his earliest friendships was with groundbreaking artist Ed Ruscha. Some Los Angeles Apartments, originally published in 1965, was a gift to Hopper from the artist, with the following inscription: “For Dennis / & Brooke / Ed Ruscha / Dec. 1965.” Its estimate is $15,000-$20,000.

Some Los Angeles Apartments is one of 16 artist books produced by Ruscha, who was a prominent early influence on the genre’s development and American artist book culture in general. Some might argue his Twentysix Gasoline Stations was the first modern artist book.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Though well known as a patron and promoter of many avant-garde artists in the 1960s, Dennis Hopper was also an artist, photographer, writer and of course an actor and director in his own right. This untitled work from 1960 is the earliest known surviving piece by Dennis Hopper, part of Julien Auctions‘ Legends: Hollywood & Royalty sale on Friday, September 8, with bidding available via LiveAuctioneers.

The painting is an abstract impressionistic portrait of a face in shades of brown, green, orange, red and yellow. Hopper wrote his name in the lower right. It has an estimate of $6,000-$8,000.

Hopper was also considered a talented painter, whose paintings were exhibited in galleries around the world. He developed an appreciation for the art form and began to paint as a young boy. Shortly before the Bel Air Fire of 1961 burned his house down and destroyed all of his early paintings and photographs, he sent this portrait to his brother David as a gift.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Dennis Hopper was a prolific photographer throughout his life, and had numerous exhibitions based on his still images. This GAF Anscomatic hand-held super 8 camera, circa 1970-71, is a featured lot at Julien Auctions‘ Legends: Hollywood & Royalty event on Friday, September 8, with bidding available via LiveAuctioneers.

The camera is untested and shows signs of wear. It is a GAF model ST/110, and it is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — This film-used image of Dennis Hopper is a great addition to any Hollywood collection, featured at Julien Auctions‘ Legends: Hollywood & Royalty event on Friday, September 8, with bidding available via LiveAuctioneers.

The poster was found in one of Hopper’s Taos, New Mexico properties, the Mabel Dodge Luhan house. In the 1971 film The American Dreamer, this 39.5 by 27.5in poster can be seen affixed to a refrigerator in a scene.

After production, it was removed and given a linen backing to preserve it. It appears in the Julien’s auction with an estimate of $800-$1,200.
