As much a part of the Nantucket art scene as Osona is Robert Stark, Jr. (1933-2014). Born and raised on the island, Stark would return from his Korean War navy service to begin his art career and open the now-legendary Stark Gallery at Nantucket’s Old North Wharf. His artistic style is described by many as luminist — a form of realism in which brush strokes are hidden and the look of the landscape’s atmosphere and lighting is paramount. The sale includes Red-Sailed Catboat Rounding Brant Point, Nantucket, a classic Stark oil on masonite that is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

Certain to make a life-changing Christmas gift is a platinum emerald-cut diamond ring with a stone weighing 4.1 carats. It comes with a GIA report and has an estimate of $80,000-$100,000, making it the sale’s most anticipated lot.

Whimsical art is always a feature of Osona Christmas Stroll events, and this edition does not disappoint. Fresh from a Nantucket collection is a Lowell Herrero (1921-2015) oil on canvas titled View of Mattawa Judy and Marge Wading. His naive style incorporating exaggerated proportions is on display in the piece, which is estimated at $7,000-$9,000.

NANTUCKET, Mass. — Esteemed auction house Rafael Osona brings to market quality Nantucket-related art and estate merchandise in its 660-lot Late Summer Auction set for Saturday, August 26. Online bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The sale features objet d’art from the estate of Stephen Weinroth of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and also the contents of several recently sold Nantucket ocean-front homes and estates.

A key grouping of works by famed Nantucket artist John Austin (1918-2001) are included in the sale. Austin’s Nantucket body of work is substantial, and entirely reflective of the locale. A skilled draftsman, he would often sketch his subjects on location, making detailed notes for color, and later finished the work in his studio.

Leading the lots is Sankaty Head Light Interior, a tempera on board estimated at $1,800–$2,500. 

Another important lot is Fishing Vessel Johnny A. Entering Nantucket Harbor at the Jetty, depicting a classic American trawler. It carries an estimate of $1,500–$2,000.

A small grouping of items from Nantucket artist Harriet Mottes is also featured. Mottes was known for painting Nantucket scenes both on board and on boxes. Nantucket’s North Wharf Cottages, painted on a cherry Shaker box, is estimated at $400–$600. 

And what Nantucket-themed home would be complete without Weatherend furniture? The Maine-based company creates island lifestyle outdoor furnishings, often finished in what’s known as “white yacht” paint, so perfect for any beach setting. A pair of Weatherend Southern Harbor chaise lounges, with two end tables, are estimated at $2,000–$3,000. 

The top lot in the sale is a Donald Allen Mosher (1945-2014) oil on canvas entitled Glory Days, Gloucester, Massachusetts. The 30.5 by 36in. original is estimated at $6,000–$8,000.

NANTUCKET, Mass. – The two-day sale held by Rafael Osona on August 5-6 was topped by a work by local artist Anne Ramsdell Congdon (1873-1958). Her early 1940s oil-on-Masonite entitled Middle Moors, Nantucket, estimated at $25,000-$35,000, hammered for $45,000 and sold for $55,350 plus the buyer’s premium. Absentee and Internet live bidding was facilitated through LiveAuctioneers.

Congdon began her career painting delicate watercolor land and seascapes during summer visits to Nantucket. However, after returning seriously to painting in the 1920s, she trained first with the American Impressionist Charles Woodbury in Boston and, after moving permanently to the island in 1930, she trained with the man considered the “dean” of Nantucket painters and teachers, Frank Swift Chase.

Working in the plein air tradition amidst the wharves, moors, creeks, ponds and pastures, Congdon instinctively dropped thin paint and smooth finishes in favor of what’s called “wet-on-wet” impasto and blocks of color.

Living in a home at 5 Orange Street, she took a studio among the disused so-called “shanties” along Commercial Wharf. At a time when the island was morphing from an under-developed backwater to an upmarket second home destination, she exhibited regularly at the Easy Street Gallery and other galleries throughout the 1940s.

The 14-by-18in Middle Moors, Nantucket, with its sweeping diagonal lines of ochres, reds and greens, was from this prime period and is signed and dated 1941.

Five years later when the Artist’s Association of Nantucket mounted a retrospective exhibition of five local artists deemed to be of national importance, Congdon was among them.

As more of her mature work comes to auction, some on the market for only the first or second time, her reputation is also growing in the 21st-century commercial sphere.

Middle Moors, Nantucket will be included in a forthcoming online catalogue raisonné of Anne Ramsdell Congdon’s work being prepared by the Nantucket Historical Association.
