NEW YORK — Phil and Judy Sieg were small-town Pennsylvania childhood sweethearts, living a quiet life as alums of their beloved Penn State Nittany Lions, raising a family, and remarkably, amassing an astounding private art collection that came to market after Phil’s 2021 passing. Hindman brought the collection to its New York saleroom October 26, and while having some of the most anticipated lots pass, many surprising results emerged from the depths of the catalog. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

With the Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) Calm Summer Day from 1863 and all three of the Lucie Rie (1902-1995) bowls passing, four of Hindman’s most anticipated lots failed to sell. But this simply opened the floor, and bidders’ wallets, to other opportunities that produced notable results.

Still life painter Albert York (1928-2009) turned out to be a big winner, with nine of his works selling above or within their estimates. Exclusively represented by Davis & Langdale since the early 1960s, the Siegs acquired the York works from the gallery during a long period. Zinnias in a Glass Vase from 1981 triumphed, hammering for $120,000 and selling for $156,000 with buyer’s premium.

York’s Porch Bench with Seated Figure from around 1967 also exceeded estimates, hammering for $140,000 and selling for $182,000 with buyer’s premium against a high estimate of $80,000.

Contemporary realist Francis Speight (1896-1989) painted rural landscapes as he saw them, traveling the countryside in search of views worth rendering. White House with Variations from 1930 was purchased by the Siegs directly from the artist in 1975, suggesting the importance of the work to Speight — he kept it for 45 years. The hammer fell at $100,000 and it sold for $130,000 with buyer’s premium, far above the $40,000 high estimate.

German American still life painter extraordinaire Severin Roesen (1848-1872) continues to captivate art buyers more than 150 years after his passing. Still Life of Fruit with Bird’s Nest is believed by Hindman to have been finished between 1860-70. It, too, topped expectations, hammering for $37,500 and selling for $48,750 with buyer’s premium against a high estimate of $25,000.

The painstaking realism of Dumpster by Carlos Marcote (b. 1950-) also performed markedly well. Purchased from his dealer Staempfli Gallery in New York in 1983, the 1976 oil on canvas hammered for $2,250 and sold for $2,925 with buyer’s premium, half again as much as the high estimate.

CINCINNATI, Ohio — A top example of the sand bottle artistry of Andrew Clemens (1857-1894) is on display at Hindman’s American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts auction on Wednesday, October 4. The catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

During his short life — he died at just 37 years of age — Clemens gained national fame for his sand art, relying only on colored sand, some homemade tools and wire to arrange the intricate illustrations. He specialized in images of flags, boats, eagles and landscapes, usually with complex geometric patterns. Clemens began his career while attending the Iowa State School for the Deaf, having lost his hearing as a child from a bout of encephalitis.

Few of Clemens’ works have survived, making those that come to market exciting lots to watch. This example, commissioned by John and Margaret Leary of McGregor, Iowa, (Clemens’ hometown) dates to circa 1887 and features a sampler-style design with radiant colors. The item comes with direct provenance from the family and is estimated at $60,000-$80,000.

Born in Prussia, Severin Roesen (1815–1872) grew from humble origins to become one of the acknowledged leaders of the still life movement in 19th-century America. Roesen emigrated to the United States in 1848, earning a living by selling his paintings. His last known painting is dated 1872, and there is no historical record of him after that, interestingly.

This floral still life is dated circa 1870, near the end of his career. The painting comes with authentication by Judith Hansen O’Toole, formerly of the Westmoreland Museum, stating in part, “It should be noted that Roesen painted a much greater number of fruit pieces than floral, making the latter more rare.” The lot is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

Bernard Barenholtz was a titan in the American toy industry, both as founder of Creative Playthings, an early educational toy company, and as a collector and author of antique toys and Americana. This unique early 20th-century bird cage, fashioned from steel sheets and wire to resemble an American riverboat, was formerly part of the Barenholtz collection. It carries an estimate of $2,000-$3,000.
