NEW YORK – An original lyric sheet to the song that prompted the FBI to investigate John Lennon will be offered at Swann Auction Galleries. Signed by both Lennon and co-author Yoko Ono, the words to Attica State are estimated at $10,000-$20,000 as part of a Thursday, March 7 sale of autographs, which will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.

Attica State was written for the Plastic Ono Band shortly after the state suppression of rioting at the Attica Correctional Facility in Attica, New York claimed 43 lives in September 1971. It includes the lyric: What a waste of human power, what a waste of human lives, shoot the prisoners in the towers, 43 poor widowed wives.

The former Beatle performed the song publicly for the first time as part of a rally for White Panther Party founder and Black Panther supporter John Sinclair on December 10, 1971. This sheet, signed to the upper edge, is a photocopy of the original typed lyrics that was used during a second performance of the song on the David Frost Show on December 16, 1971. The FBI investigated Lennon from December 1971 until at least Richard Nixon’s defeat of George McGovern in November 1972.

The top-estimated lot in the sale is a 1945 presentation first edition of As We Remember Joe, the privately printed memorial to Joseph Kennedy Jr., who was killed in action in 1944. Sent to the publisher’s secretary, Edgar B. Sherrill, it includes the inscription ‘For Mr. Sherrill with the greatest appreciation for all of his thoughtfulness from Jack Kennedy, May 1945’, plus a typed list of names of those who were to receive some of the 500 printed copies. Described as being in ‘uncommonly good condition’, it has an estimate of $15,000-$25,000.

A group photograph taken at the inauguration ceremony of John F. Kennedy signed by 15 attendees including Jacqueline Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Earl Warren, and Richard Nixon is estimated at $3,000-$4,000, while a score for Rhapsody in Blue, signed and inscribed by its composer, George Gershwin, is estimated at $6,000-$9,000. Rhapsody in Blue premiered at Aeolian Hall in New York City on February 12, 1924 with this early edition of the piano solo and second piano printed in 1925. Gershwin signed it ‘For Mr. Eugene Fuerst – with all best wishes’ on the title page.

NEW YORK — Nearly 350 lots of vintage posters from the biggest names in Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Soviet governmental art will delight bidders at Swann’s on Thursday, February 29. The leap-year catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

So iconic in Finland that it was made into a postage stamp in 2006 is Bil-Bol, a 1907 poster that has murky origins. Based on the Finnish epic poem of Kalevalathe artwork depicts a nude maiden being whisked away by a determined suitor in an automobile. Many collectors have attributed this poster’s commission to an automobile dealer, but the most likely explanation is that it was designed by artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931) for Swedish baron Carl Cederström. He founded Sweden’s first car company, Bil-Aktibolaget, better known and trademarked as Bil-Bol. The poster carries an estimate of $40,000-$60,000.

The sale includes a phenomenal nine posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). Estimated at $40,000-$60,000 is L’Estamp Originale, one of 100 signed copies by the artist in support of the art publication of the same name, published by André Marty. The publication’s goal was to highlight the upcoming generation of new artists, and Toulouse-Lautrec was featured in issue no. 1 with his cover art showing his muse Jane Avril standing in the Ancourt & Cie. printing shop while his favorite printer Père Cotelle is hard at work.

One of the giants of the Art Nouveau movement was Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), the Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist whose most iconic designs were collected in 1902 in Documents Décoratifs, a portfolio of 72 color plates. So revered was Mucha that art schools routinely taught from this publication. It is difficult to find a complete example of this work, as many have been broken up and sold off as individual plates. The portfolio is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) was a French poster and type designer, two skills brought together beautifully in Cycles Brillant. This 1925 Art Deco masterpiece was created very early in Cassandre’s career, showing his powerful use of the cycle’s angle to affect the type and the viewer’s eye. The poster has an estimate of $15,000-$20,000.

Venereal disease has long been a public health issue, as seen in this prewar “She May Be … A Bag of Trouble” design ripped from a pre-code Hollywood one sheet. Created by an artist known only as Christian, the poster features an underline of VDgraphic-40, leading Swann to attribute a 1940 origin date, though it may actually indicate number 40 in a series of health warning pieces. The poster is modestly estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

NEW YORK – Swann Auction Galleries is presenting The Subculture Sale, a timed-plus auction that surveys the fringe, the avant-garde, and the indie, and probably includes something that speaks to your youth or those of people you love. Launched on January 23, lots will begin to close around noon Eastern time on Thursday, February 8. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

No fewer than 12 lots reference Andy Warhol (1928-1987) in some way, and several have to do with his collaboration with the legendary band The Velvet Underground. A key offering is a group of 12 albums of the 1967 release The Velvet Underground & Nico. Warhol designed the cover, which became famous for its image of a banana covered by a removable sticker of a peel that invited the record owner to ‘Peel Slowly And See’. The yellow and black stickers on the dozen albums are in various states of removal and represent different pressings and cover iterations of the record. They are together estimated at $7,000-$10,000.

Another breathtaking prize in the sale lineup is a copy of The Velvet Underground & Nico signed by band members Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, John Cale, and Maureen ‘Mo’ Tucker. It is also inscribed to ‘Sal’ by Reed and Tucker, and it carries an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.

Attracting the highest estimate in the sale, at $10,000-$15,000, is a 1980 Xeroxed collage by Keith Haring (1958-1990). Dubbed Ronald Reagan Accused of TV Star Sex Death after headline clippings the artist assembled from the New York Post, he photocopied the work and posted it across New York City. Understandably, few of these ephemeral and formative Haring pieces survive. The provenance of this one includes the collection of Robert Beers, a film archivist and a member of New York’s Ridiculous Theatrical Company. The Haring shares its $10,000-$15,000 estimate with Untitled (Burning House with Camouflage Plane), a 1982 piece by David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992).

Also showcased is a circa-2002 trio of foam-over-plywood prop gravestones for Nas, Tupac Shakur, and the Notorious B.I.G., created for a music video for Nas’s cover of Tupac Shakur’s Thugz Mansion. The cover song appears on the 2002 Nas album God’s Son, but the video was never made. The props are collectively estimated at $3,000-$4,000.

John Coltrane fans will thrill to the inclusion of a circa-1967 promotional poster for the artist, released by Impulse Records, which bought out his contract in 1961. The lot notes describe it as ‘One of the few, if only, posters issued by Impulse featuring Coltrane during the 1960s. Rare.’ It is estimated at $3,500-$5,000.

Swann President Nicholas D. Lowry said of the Subculture Sale, “Swann is excited to be able to bring this eclectic, unexpected, and seldom-encountered selection of material to market. In many ways, we are offering a living history in this auction. Subcultural relics and societal items from within or not so much longer ago than our own lifetimes — a time frame underserved by the auction community. Our thanks to Boo Hooray Gallery, who helped co-curate this collection of ephemeral fragments and inspirational stepping stones.”

NEW YORK — A fascinating look into the reclusive life of American modernist icon Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) from the perspective of correspondence with her longtime travel agent came to market October 26 at Swann Auction Galleries. Four lots of mostly handwritten documents retained by the agency all exceeded their estimates. Complete results for the Fine Books & Autographs sale are now available at LiveAuctioneers.

The lifetime output of O’Keeffe, spanning realism and abstractionism in both photography and paintings, makes her difficult to define. Her marriage to photographer Alfred Stieglitz in New York helped propel her to fame, but her true muse would come in the form of the American Southwest, where she ultimately settled and spent the rest of her life creating iconic pieces such as Cow’s Skull and Summer Days.

Though situated in New Mexico at her Abiquiú home and studio, O’Keeffe kept up a travel schedule associated with gallery exhibitions, visits to other artists, and similar business-oriented callings. As revealed in the dozens of letters sent to her travel agent Donald Ferguson, O’Keeffe used the occasions to arrange travel as a cover for reaching out and dispensing both mundane and heartfelt musings on her life and loves. The excerpts provided by Swann show a remarkable intimacy on the part of O’Keeffe with regard to her travel agent and his employees, feeling free to discuss whatever she needed to communicate.

Some excerpts include:

I just wrote these two pages of Biographical Data–if you want to call it that–throw it in the waste basket if you want to–I don’t care.

I am a painter–always have been.

I have had large retrospective exhibitions at the Chicago Art Institute, The Museum of Modern Art of N.Y. and at present have twelve paintings hanging at the Metropolitan Museum, N.Y. It is an exhibition of Fourteen Americans–from Colonial Times to today. I lived in N.Y. City from 1918 ’till 1950 and had exhibitions almost every year.

Now I live in the country 100 miles from the railroad station–60 miles from an airport. I have no telephone and think I have a very good life. . . .

I have no radio–no television–but I have a very good Hifidelity setup. Monteverdi is my favorite composer.

I like my garden, my dogs: I prefer dark–black or blue–chows and I like to walk.

I usually get up before sunrise in the morning. When my city friends ask what I do evenings I always have to laugh–I work hard and I am usually so tired I have to go to bed.

I would rather live where I live than any other place I have ever seen. Maybe going ’round the world I may find something better, but I doubt it. . .

The top O’Keeffe lot was an archive of 47 items, most written by hand and generally signed G. OK. The material ranged in age from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s and while discussing travel, her letters would invariably veer into personal musings that must have been fascinating and a little perplexing to Ferguson and his staff. Estimated at $15,000-$25,000, the lot hammered at $90,000 and sold for $117,000 with buyer’s premium.

Hammering at $26,000 and selling for $33,800 with buyer’s premium was a two-item lot from which the quotes above were drawn. Dozens of floor bids kept the lot climbing until the moment of sale.

A letter to Ferguson discussing an upcoming Worcester, Massachusetts O’Keeffe retrospective in 1960 also included a signed passport photograph showing the aged artist scowling at the camera. It hammered for $9,000 and sold for $11,700 with buyer’s premium.

NEW YORK — Chronicling the advancement of knowledge of the world from the 16th through the 20th centuries, nearly 300 lots of historic maps and atlases head to market on Thursday, December 7 at Swann Auction Galleries. The catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Featured are maps of the American continent from its early colonial settlements, charts detailing the period of expansion in the West, and a 1929 chart illustrating the earliest established commercial airline flight paths in America.

Interestingly, the map sale’s top lot isn’t a map at all. Printed in 1834 and 1855, John Gould’s A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans is a set of two publications as referenced by the dates. The former is the original publication, while the latter is entitled Supplement to the First Edition. It features an uncolored anatomical plate and 53 vividly hand-colored lithographed plates of tropical toucans by Edward Lear and John and Elizabeth Gould. Printed in folio size (21.5 by 14.5in), the set is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

Dated to the period between 1688-1697 is a set of 24 engraved gores (portions of a map) that would have been used to create Vincenzo Coronelli’s monumental 42in terrestrial globe. The lot consists of segments of laid paper, about 25.25 by 11in at each’s widest point. Engraved in late 17th-century Venice, the set carries an estimate of $18,000-$22,000.

An interesting anomaly from early cartography was the depiction of California as an island separated from the main of North America by a wide gulf, akin to the Sea of Cortez separating Baja California from the balance of Mexico. One of the earliest depictions of this phenomena was drawn by Pieter Goos in 1666 Amsterdam. Measuring 20 by 24.5in, his double-page engraved chart of California is “pleasantly designed and balanced with rhumb lines, scaled borders and attractive carto-ornamentation,” according to Swann’s specialist Caleb Kiffer. The map is estimated at $7,000-$10,000.

William Henry Cotton (1880-1958) began his career as an accomplished portraitist, but transitioned to caricatures when he began contributing to Vanity Fair magazine in 1931. His 1938 pastel and printed clippings collage ‘map’ titled Carriers of the New Black Plague features his trademark style lampooning various controversial world leaders of the period. It appeared in an issue of Ken magazine, a short-lived political commentary magazine that had many literary notables contributing, including Ernest Hemingway. The original illustration is estimated at $3,000-$4,000.

NEW YORK — Leading names in modern and contemporary African American art outperformed estimates in spirited bidding at Swann Auction Galleries on October 19. The 216-lot sale’s complete results are available for viewing at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale’s highest-estimated lot, Untitled by Sam Gilliam (1933-2022), hammered just above its low estimate at $160,000 ($208,000 with buyer’s premium).

Instead, it was the work of Alma W. Thomas (1891-1978) that delivered the most exuberant results. Thomas, who for most of her career taught art at a Washington, D.C. junior high school, grew in stature to become recognized as a leading Expressionist.

Etude, an acrylic on arches paper from 1968, hammered at $130,000 ($169,000 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $50,000-$75,000, while Transcendental sold at $120,000 ($156,000 with buyer’s premium).

Hard-edged geometric abstractions are the domain of Al Loving (1935-2005). His precise work leaves the viewer’s eye with a myriad directions to view each piece, such as in Janice, a 1970 acrylic on shaped cotton canvas. Active bidding drove Janice from a start of $44,000 to a hammer of $120,000 ($156,000 with buyer’s premium), well above its estimate of $60,000-$90,000.

One lot in the sale came with a very interesting past. Untitled (Flight Into Egypt) is thought to be a design study by Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) for his eventual Flight Into Egypt of 1923. The first African American artist to gain international acclaim, Tanner was known for his biblically themed paintings, which he produced as an expatriate in France. Untitled was thought by his son and documentarian Jessie O. Tanner and others to be the famous artwork’s design study (the original hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York). It sold for $90,000 ($117,000 with buyer’s premium), far above the $40,000-$60,000 estimate.

NEW YORK – In any war, there is always someone who becomes the first to die. In the case of the Civil War, we know who that person was: Luther C. Ladd, a 17-year-old Union soldier from Lowell, Massachusetts, a member of Company D in the 6th Massachusetts Volunteers.

But he didn’t perish on a grassy field in the rural South. Ladd and four others lost their lives on April 19, 1861 in Baltimore, when a mob attacked them as they were traversing the 10 blocks between the train station where they had disembarked to the train station where they would continue their journey south. The incident, known variously as the Baltimore Riot of 1861, the Pratt Street Riots, and the Pratt Street Massacre, occurred one week after the Civil War started.

The date was inadvertently charged with meaning, as it was the 86th anniversary of the battles in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts that started the American Revolutionary War. And the hometown of Ladd and Addison Whitney, who died alongside him, carried extra significance in the context of the Civil War. Lowell was America’s first industrial city, full of textile mills. After the cotton was grown in the south and harvested by enslaved people, it went to Lowell, where young, unmarried women known as mill girls transformed it into cloth.

Weeks or perhaps days before he died, Ladd donned his uniform and sat for an ambrotype photograph. The only known example of its kind, it will appear in the Printed & Manuscript Americana sale taking place at Swann Auction Galleries on Thursday, September 28, with an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.

A second lot in the sale, estimated at $800-$1,200, relates to the aftermath of the Baltimore riot. Lot 111 features a funeral program for the May 6, 1861 services for Ladd and Whitney, held at Lowell’s Huntington Hall, the very building from which their company departed. Also included are two cartes-de-visite of the obelisk-topped memorial under which the soldiers’ remains were reburied in 1865. Known as the Ladd and Whitney monument, it still stands on a triangular strip of land mere feet from Lowell City Hall and Lowell High School, looking exactly as it does in the period photos in the Swann sale.

NEW YORK – Swann Auction Galleriessummer vintage poster offering on August 3 received a significant boost from a single consignment. A group of 50 Italian Liberty posters were deaccessioned to benefit the acquisitions fund of the Palmer Museum of Art. The Penn State University museum is temporarily closed as moves to a new campus building that is slated to open in spring 2024.

Several posters from this group landed among the top sellers in the auction.

These included a poster the auction house had not encountered for 25 years, an extraordinary allegorical image marking the launch of the battleship Roma from the La Spezia shipyard on April 21, 1907.

Designed by Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868-1944), its primary subject is a mermaid bearing the wreathed SPQR emblem of the Italian state with the pre-dreadnaught class battleship itself confined to the background as it cast into the Ligurian sea, accompanied by a host of Italian flags and a large plume of water. Roma later saw action in the Italo-Turkish War in 1911-12.

Although almost 5ft by 3ft 6in, this is essentially the top portion of the complete poster. Originally it would have had an additional text sheet underneath listing the festivities surrounding the launch. Estimated at $10,000-$15,000 to account for some replaced losses and repaired tears, it took $15,600.

Estimated at $12,000-$18,000 and achieving $16,900 was Magazzini Vittoria, created for a women’s clothier in 1909 by Aldo Mazza, another of the so-called “fathers of modern Italian poster art.” The sensuous image in the Art Nouveau style is well known. It depicts a lithe and graceful woman enveloping herself within the multi-colored fabrics, while a peacock at her feet looks up as if in envy. This example was in relatively good condition, with some tears repaired when it was mounted on paper.

A less familiar image by Mazza, and one that generated significant competition, was his Scineza Per Tutti (Science For All). Again from 1909, the client was a fortnightly scientific journal published by the Sonzogno publishing house of Milan from 1879 to 1943. This image, touting the innovation of the X-ray, was Mazza’s winning design for a competition created by the journal. With a condition grade of B but now mounted on linen, it was estimated at $3,000-$4,000 and earned $16,900.
