NEW YORK — Nearly 350 lots of vintage posters from the biggest names in Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Soviet governmental art will delight bidders at Swann’s on Thursday, February 29. The leap-year catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

So iconic in Finland that it was made into a postage stamp in 2006 is Bil-Bol, a 1907 poster that has murky origins. Based on the Finnish epic poem of Kalevalathe artwork depicts a nude maiden being whisked away by a determined suitor in an automobile. Many collectors have attributed this poster’s commission to an automobile dealer, but the most likely explanation is that it was designed by artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931) for Swedish baron Carl Cederström. He founded Sweden’s first car company, Bil-Aktibolaget, better known and trademarked as Bil-Bol. The poster carries an estimate of $40,000-$60,000.

The sale includes a phenomenal nine posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). Estimated at $40,000-$60,000 is L’Estamp Originale, one of 100 signed copies by the artist in support of the art publication of the same name, published by André Marty. The publication’s goal was to highlight the upcoming generation of new artists, and Toulouse-Lautrec was featured in issue no. 1 with his cover art showing his muse Jane Avril standing in the Ancourt & Cie. printing shop while his favorite printer Père Cotelle is hard at work.

One of the giants of the Art Nouveau movement was Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), the Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist whose most iconic designs were collected in 1902 in Documents Décoratifs, a portfolio of 72 color plates. So revered was Mucha that art schools routinely taught from this publication. It is difficult to find a complete example of this work, as many have been broken up and sold off as individual plates. The portfolio is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) was a French poster and type designer, two skills brought together beautifully in Cycles Brillant. This 1925 Art Deco masterpiece was created very early in Cassandre’s career, showing his powerful use of the cycle’s angle to affect the type and the viewer’s eye. The poster has an estimate of $15,000-$20,000.

Venereal disease has long been a public health issue, as seen in this prewar “She May Be … A Bag of Trouble” design ripped from a pre-code Hollywood one sheet. Created by an artist known only as Christian, the poster features an underline of VDgraphic-40, leading Swann to attribute a 1940 origin date, though it may actually indicate number 40 in a series of health warning pieces. The poster is modestly estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Rolex reference 1675 GMT Master was introduced in 1959 and stayed in continuous production until 1980. There are a number of different bezel types, but the original and best-selling variant has the red and blue ‘Pepsi’ bezel designed to help the wearer differentiate day and night.

What makes this 1966 example stand out from the crowd is the lettering to the dial that includes both the Rolex branding and the name of the retailer Tiffany & Co. Known as ‘double signed’ GMTs, these watches don’t come to market often. This example, accompanied by its original certificate and instruction booklet, dated September 28, 1966, is estimated at $10,000-$15,000 in the auction to be held at Fine Estate, Inc. in its August Fine Auction on Sunday, August 20.

WOODBURY, Conn. – This poster by The Strobridge Litho. Co. of Cincinnati is one of the few Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) designed while living in America from 1904 to 1912.

Similar in style and format to the classic Art Nouveau designs made a decade earlier for Sarah Bernhardt, it was created in 1908 to promote Leslie Carter (1862-1937) in a Broadway production of John Luther Long’s play Kassa. Both Mucha and Long were both so taken with Carter that they apparently completed their work without compensation. However, the play was a commercial flop, running at the Liberty Theater for just three months, from January to March 1909.

Due to its size – it measures an impressive 7ft 4in high – it was completed in two sections. This printing, with some repairs, has a broad estimate of $50-$5,000 as part of the Autumn Fine Estates Auction at Schwenke Auctioneers on Tuesday, August 22.

GARDENA, Calif. – This 18th-century Sèvres soft-paste porcelain ice pail (seau à glace) carries the date letter O for 1767 and the tiny painter’s mark of an anchor for Charles Buteux Sr. (1719-82).

A former decorator at the rival Chantilly porcelain factory, Buteux arrived at Sèvres in 1745. A document surviving in the Bibliothèque et Archives de la Manufacture Nationale de Porcelaine de Sèvres records his physical description as ‘cinq pieds trois pouces’ (5ft 3in), with gray eyes, brown hair and an ‘aquiline’ nose.

While he painted a number of typical rococo and neoclassic vignettes, his particular forte was painting the type of musical motifs seen on this ice pail. According to the archives, he painted more than 400 of them a year.

The piece, fitted with a removable liner and lid, has an estimate of $5,000-$7,000 at Taylor & Harris’ Decorative Arts & Jewelry Auction on Sunday, August 27.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Not to be confused with the modern limited edition toby jugs of the same name, the early Royal Doulton figure Spook is among the most desirable models in all the HN series.

Titled Spook and given the series number HN58, the design was created by modeler Harry Tittensor and was first issued in 1916 in the midst of the First World War. Both this model and the Double Spook (HN88, issued in 1918) were available to order until 1936 and they were made in many as eight different treatments, from monochrome flambe red to the lustrous Titanian glazes. However, all are today considered great rarities.

This example, in a Sung flambe glaze, carries an estimate of $6,000-$8,000 as part of Lion and Unicorn’s Rare Glass, Ceramics & Pottery Auction on Sunday, August 27. The auction house’s catalog description reads: “When Tittensor first modeled The Spook, one wonders if he realized he was about to create one of the most enduring – and frequently reissued and reinterpreted – pieces to ever come out the Royal Doulton figure studio. Frequently imitated, this spook stands alone.” A total of 124 Royal Doulton figure lots are included in the sale.
