Description
Hoover Appoints U.S. Marshal for the District of Maine
An appointment for U.S. Marshal signed by Herbert Hoover and countersigned by Attorney General William DeWitt Mitchell declaring Stillman E. Woodman as Marshal for the District of Maine. With a bold Department of Justice seal on the bottom left, 1p, measuring 16" x 20", Washington, D.C. dated December 18, 1929. Light toning and foxing throughout, with mat burn present on top edge. Residue from prior framing present on verso. Boldly signed by both.
Woodman was commissioned as U.S. Marshal three separate times in 1921, 1925, and 1929. The latter marked Hoover's first year in office, which notoriously saw the start of the Great Depression following the stock market crash in October 1929.
