Description
silk and wool on linen, having a 16-line poem titled "The Importance of Piety in Youth", below signed "Elizabeth . Stoner.", all encompassed by a Berlin work floral border. Housed under glass in a modern frame. Second quarter/mid 19th century. 11 1/2" x 15 1/2" sight, 14 1/2" x 18 1/2" OA.
Catalog Note: According to the consignor, this piece comes from a family in Burkittsville, MD, and Elizabeth Stoner was a daughter of local pastor. One possible candidate out of many is Elizabeth Stoner (1829-1855) of Frederick and Johnsville, MD, daughter of John Stoner (1788-1852) and Elizabeth Kinzer (1797-1881).

Condition
Good to very good visual condition with some toning to linen mostly at top edge and upper right corner, scattered small holes mostly along border, wool thread with some light fading/fugitive color, frame with some wear and surface scratches. Not examined out of frame.
