Description
Stephen Macomber (1889-1983). "Snow Scene". Oil onboard. SLR. Dimensions: 26" x 37"; framed 35" x 45". This very large work is a strong addition to any collection of American painting. Macomber’s winter landscape (probably of a Westerly locale) is reminiscent of the famous American painter Charles Burchfield, known for his ability to capture the moods and splendor of winter. Likewise, Macomber often wandered and painted his beloved hometown of Westerly, RI celebrating the local neighborhood and the starkness of its winter trees juxtaposed against the warm home retreats on the hillside. RISD graduate & longstanding RISD teacher, Macomber was known for his landscapes & still-life. He studied at Academie Julian, Paris & Hans Hoffman School of Modern Art, NYC. Exhibited at Providence Art Club & South Co. Art Assoc. frequently, as well as in NYC, Newport & Chicago. Works in RISD Museum & Westerly Public Library.
