Description
A helmet M 1848 for infantry enlisted men, circa 1850High, black lacquered leather skull, complete with all brass fittings. The neck guard sewn on, the front visor not stitched but attached by two round-head rivets on the side. The large Schleswig-Holstein double-headed eagle screw-mounted on the front with clamp nuts as the emblem for the Schleswig-Holstein army that was allied with Prussia. Convex chinscales with leather underlay (a small, inconspicuous repair) on white, geometric rosettes (two minor defects on the right) and knurled screws. State cockades in lacquered metal on the right. The tall, smooth spike (not removable) on a cruciform base with four white round-head screws and clamp nuts. Inside, the broad, dark brown leather sweatband in fine condition, visors with red leather underlay. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age. Exceptionally rare, early helmet. Overall in good condition.Condition: II
