William Anderson Roberts (1837-1899) attributed. Portrait of Nannie Cary. 19th c. folk art oil on canvas depicting Nannie Cary Caldwell of Yanceyville, NC with small dog. Housed in a giltwood and applied gesso ornate molded wood frame. Image is 22” w x 27” h. Frame is 28” w x 33”h. Est. $3,000-5,000. Ship: $75. Nannie Cary Caldwell (June4, 1870-Oct. 8, 1875) was the daughter of William and Martha Caldwell. She died as a child and is buried in the Russell Family Cemetery in Locust Hill, NC. The painting is attribute to portrait artist, and Confederate Civil War Veteran, William Anderson Roberts. He was born in the Prospect Church Community just outside of Yanceyville and was a well-known and prominent artist during this period. The portrait descended in an Orange, VA estate whose owners are descendants on one family side to Bartlett Yancey, whom Yanceyville, NC is named after and on the other family side to Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart who was U.S. Secretary of the Interior 1850-1853.
