Description
An unusual Maya polychrome jar from the Ulua Valley of Honduras, c. AD 400 – 700. This corseted vessel with intact loop handles and is elaborately decorated. The upper register features a pair of anthropomorphic heads wearing a feathered headdress, while the lower section is decorated with a variety of symbols and glyphic devices. The interior is covered with a red band and orange wash over cream slip. Dia: 6 in, with vivid paint, strong mineral deposits, minor repair. Ex New York estate auction.
