Ersari Chuval, Turkmenistan circa 1850, 2ft. 10in. x 4ft. 4in. 86 x 132 cm
Condition: excellent, full pile and excellent color, this piece is complete with very small areas of wear
Provenance: Middle Amu Darya region, Turkmenistan
Age: Circa 1850

Knot type: Asymmetrical, open right hor: sq. inch: 10 160 vert: 16
Warp: Wool, ivory, natural, z2s. Slight warp depression.
Weft: Wool, medium brown, two shoots, alternating.
Sides: Two bundles of three body warps each. Overcast with bands of red, blue, orange and brown wool.
Ends: Top - balanced plain weave kilim end. First ½†done with red wool wefts, then folded over, then ¾†done with nature brown wool, then folded under and sewn down. Bottom - original not extant.
Colors: (10) Red, red orange (insect?), light violet (insect?), orange, light blue, medium blue, blue green, ivory, yellow, medium brown.
Design: On a red field are twelve Salor type chuval guls. The guls are arranged in three vertical columns of four guls each. The guls are quartered, each interior gul quadrant contains a dotted "X" device. Between of the chuval guls is a dyrnak minor gul, also quartered.At all side of the main field is a border where the design stops. This feature is commonly found on Salor chuvals. The main border in a diamond variant found on some Salor work. On either side is a triangle mosaic minor borders. There are guard stripes of various dotted cruciform designs. At the side are plain red reserves. The lower elem contains a row of tree like forms with
amulet devices between. These might be based the the tree devices found on Salor chuvals. At the top edge of the upper elem is a row of multi colored amulet devices connected by a zig-zag line. Above are two barber pole stripes and a solid blue line above that.
