A Treasure Trove of Discoveries
Gray's March auction is a Cabinet of Wonders What do Pablo Picasso, Commander J.J. Clark, and the Van Sweringen Brothers have in common? Very little ? until now. Here are just a few of the lots up for auction this month. LOT 2. A Curtiss aluminum propeller blade from Plane #4, the U.S. Navy's F6C6, piloted by Commander J.J. Clark at Cleveland's inaugural Air Race in 1929, where it came in fourth. Not first. Fourth. Commander Clark went on to become a Vice Admiral. The propeller went on to become this lot. LOT 6. One of only one hundred earthenware plates titled "Visage", made by Pablo Picasso at Madoura Pottery in 1960. Sixteen inches of ceramic proof that the man never stopped playing. LOT 5. A 25-inch "Jackie O" belt designed by Lisa Sotilis for Cartier in a brutalist style. Wear it at the waist. Wear it at the throat. Wear it somewhere that makes people ask questions you don't fully answer. Several lots from a collection of brass, glass, and cast iron scientific instruments including a complete Franz & Pope Autoknitter from Bucyrus, Ohio, original box included. If that sentence made your pulse quicken, bid accordingly. An 18th century reverse-painted silhouette portrait Of George Washington on glass, framed with a program from a performance of Handel's "Messiah" signed by the great man himself. Magic lantern slides spanning Lincoln, Jackson, Garfield, and McKinley's assassination, alongside a brass chromatrope featuring Ulysses S. Grant spinning in red, white, and blue. Patriotism as kinetic sculpture. Lot no 1 is an original blueprint of the Van Sweringen Brothers' Cleveland Terminal Tower. Frame it, display it, or simply hold it and feel very, very local.
