How History Unfolds on Paper, Part X
This summer, Freeman’s is pleased to present How History Unfolds on Paper: Important Americana from the Eric C. Caren Collection, Part X on June 30, 2026. This single-owner auction represents one of the most extensive documentations of American history in private hands. The collection spans the period before national independence through westward expansion, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the Civil Rights Movement, and into the 21st century. The collection tells a broad and compelling story of America, highlighting communities and individuals whose voices have too often been overlooked. What distinguishes this sale is not only its scale and rarity, but the distinctly American narrative it presents.
Western Manuscripts and Miniatures
The third annual sale of Western Manuscripts and Miniatures on 9 July represents the strongest offering in the series to date. Curated in collaboration with the internationally renowned manuscript scholar Dr. Sandra Hindman, the sale brings together an exceptional selection of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, illuminated leaves, and miniatures, creating a survey of manuscript production spanning centuries of European artistic and intellectual achievement. At the heart of the sale are two distinguished collections of illuminated Books of Hours assembled by European bibliophiles in Switzerland and Germany. Richly decorated and remarkably preserved, these manuscripts feature the work of some of the most accomplished illuminators of the fifteenth century, including the Master of the Pink Canopies Saints, the Rosenberg Master, the Master of the Lee Hours, and a close collaborator of Willem Vrelant. Also among the highlights is the Missal of Jean d'Amboise, a rare and important manuscript created for Jean I d'Amboise, bishop-duke of Langres and peer of France, offering one of the finest surviving examples of late fifteenth-century Champagne illumination. A remarkable Romanesque manuscript from a Swiss private collection stands among the sale's most important offerings. Almost certainly produced at Lambach Abbey—one of the great centers of medieval art, learning, and scientific culture—the manuscript contains Origen's homilies on Genesis and Exodus, extensively decorated with initials and a full-page drawing. Preserved in its published medieval binding and still bearing the abbey shelfmark, it is an exceptional survival from one of Europe's most influential monastic scriptoria. Additional textual treasures include a twelfth-century copy of Peter the Venerable's treatise on heresy, formerly in the collection of the renowned medieval historian Giles Constable.
European Furniture & Decorative Arts: Part I
Among numerous other estates and private collections, our July 14-15 European Furniture & Decorative Arts auction includes property from a jewel of the San Francisco peninsula. In 1912, Joseph D. Grant, the financier and San Francisco civic leader, commissioned architect Lewis Hobart to design and build "Villa Rose." The 40-acre parcel in Hillsborough, California remains as one of the original, historic Gilded Age estates with lush gardens surrounded by wooded parkland. When Charles R. Blyth and his wife purchased the estate in 1936, they renamed it "Strawberry Hill," a reference to the home's pleasing pink color and a nod to Horace Walpole's Gothic Revival mansion in London When Ada and Barrie Regan purchased the residence, it was in a state of disrepair and required substantial attention to the interior and the gardens. Once restoration was complete, Ada and Barrie Regan filled the home with wonderful Continental furniture and decorative objects. Their appreciation for the home's architecture and history is evident in the collection they assembled, offered in this auction and as another sequence of lots in our July 24, 2026 Interiors auction.

Very pleased with Cincinnati location.
The Cincinnati location is top drawer. The young lady I dealt with was extremely sharp, answered a couple of questions I had and was able to take my payment and arrange shipping all during the same phone call. She even spotted a discrepancy in my mailing address, that she corrected then and there. I will definitely be bidding with them in the future.
