Pop Art
Pop Art is considered one of the most important art movements of the 20th century. It emerged in London in 1952 by a group of young avant-garde artists, writers, and architects. To challenge the art world while making their art available to the masses, pop artists created pieces of art using simple images, such as comic strips, hot dogs and hamburgers, soda-pop bottles, billboards and newspapers. The basic characteristics of this movement include vibrant colors, bold outlines, mixed media, satirical symbols, and familiar imagery. One of the most influential pop artists is Andy Warhol, a leading figure in this movement. Known as the 'Pope of Pop', Warhol used photographic screen printing to explore the connection between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture. Another top representative of the pop art movement is New York artist, Roy Lichtenstein.
