A significant selection of rarities of early Americana, California and the West, travels to the far reaches of the globe, and more. Included are printed books, manuscripts including Presidential autographs, photographs, maps ranging from early 17th century depictions of the great continents to scarce cadastral maps showing urban development of the 20th century, and more. The highlight of the auction is what can justifiably be considered the most important book in the political history of the United States, The Federalist, presenting essays by founding fathers James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay, meant to convince state legislatures of the fragile confederation that had just gained independence from Great Britain, to combine in a United States with a common government and purpose under the new constitution. On offer is a rare 1788 first edition, a deluxe copy printed in thick superfine royal writing paper, the two volumes bound in contemporary sheep.
