IMPORTANT PAINTINGS & CONTEMPORARY ART
The catalogue for Art+Object's first major art auction of 2019, Important Paintings & Contemporary Art, is now available to browse online. The auction is headlined by Charles Goldie?s magnificent and generously-scaled portrait of Atama Paparangi, painted in 1934, which also graces the catalogue cover. Another rare and exceptional entry is Colin McCahon?s Annunciation from 1958, one of very few early Religious paintings by the artist remaining in private hands.
Art+Object are also delighted to include two works by Don Binney in the catalogue following on from the record sales of three 'Bird' paintings by the artist from the 1965-1970 period in November 2018. Walking Alone (oil on board, 1969) and Bellbird over Great Barrier Island (oil on paper, 1983) are particularly fine examples featuring local Auckland landscapes.
Further highlights are seen in the finely-provenanced and superb Milan Mrkusich Corner painting entitled Meta Grey ? Gold (1974) and John Pule's It was in the kumara pit, my Mother said... (2003). Of particular note is a small private collection of New Zealand photographs including iconic images by Fiona Pardington, Ans Westra, Laurence Aberhart, and Theo Schoon.
We also acknowledge the passing of celebrated photographer Peter Peryer (1941 ? 2018), in the editorial section and on the back cover with his iconic Self Portrait with Rooster.
