Fine Antique Book Auction

Mike Clum Auctions Inc. is pleased to offer at auction the highlights from the late Dr. Murrell Lewis collection of rare and collectible books. Begun over sixty years ago, the Lewis collection is a sophisticated and ambitious collection. Dr. Lewis often secured books either in exceptional collector?s condition or books that were special or unique in some way. Many iconic book dealers aided Lewis in creating this collection including, but not limited to; Peter Howard of Serendipity Books in Berkeley, Calif., Henry Wenning of Modern Rare Books in New Haven, Conn., Marguerite Cohn of House of Books, Ltd., of New York City, and Howard S. Mott of Sheffield, Mass. The books offered in this sale are almost all first editions, many are signed or inscribed, many are limited editions, and many are unique copies. The collection is especially strong in American and British literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but there are rare and collectible books here from many areas, including science, exploration, history, children?s literature, and others. In this sale?which is merely the first of several sales?highlights include a beautiful, nearly mint copy of J. D. Salinger?s Catcher in the Rye; as well as first editions signed by Ford Madox Ford, Countee Cullen, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Samuel Beckett, and others. A wonderful small selection from an important collection. The remaining 450 books will be offered in another upcoming online only auction. Please watch our website for updates.
