Selections from the Wrigley's Gum Archives

William Wrigley, Jr. in 1891 founded a scouring soap business. As part of his marketing campaign he included a free box of baking soda with each purchase. As the freebie was more popular, he began selling just baking soda, again with a free gift with purchase of chewing gum. Once again, the freebie was more popular so in 1893 Wrigley again switched gears and introduced Juicy Fruit Gum, soon followed by Spearmint Gum. Soon Wrigley Gum was a name recognized the world over. We know that in 2008, the Mars Corporation acquired Wrigley's. Our consignor had the opportunity to go through the print file copies and acquire items from the historic Wrigley archive sometime after the turn of the millennium. This single-owner collection was acquired by a collector who had been collecting advertising materials for over a half-century. He chose larger, graphically pleasing, visually appealing items of historical importance. There are a variety of items from around the world, the earliest of which is from 1905. Virtually every item offered is from pre-1950 designs. The collection has been well cared for and the condition is as good as one could hope for. Brands included in the collection include the classic Juicy Fruit, Spearmint, Doublemint (introduced in 1914) and Orbit (launched in 1899) Gums as well as less well-known items such as Pepsin Gum, Lik-Ris Gum, PK Gum (named for Wrigley's son Philip K. Wrigley), and Sweet Sixteen varieties. Also included are Gum items relating to Bell Telephone, the NRA, and Kentucky Mint (for the Kentucky Derby). Everything from box labels, wrappers, and other advertising items from many world markets are included for each brand.
