Phillips de Pury & Company is pleased to announce the forthcoming auction of important Photographs beginning with an evening sale on April 27th and continuing through April 28th. This sale represents an exciting and distinct step for Phillips de Pury & Company. As the first sale organized by the new Worldwide Director and New York Head of the Department, Rick Wester and Lisa Newlin, the sale represents the true direction of the market, bringing together the classic photography of the 20th century and its offspring, the contemporary photographic tracings of the 20th and 21st centuries. We are pleased to offer such a variety of artist’s such as Andr&eacut; Kertész, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Ansel Adams with contemporary artist such as Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Chuck Close, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Roni Horn.

Included in the sale are three distinctive collections: Property from a Private Collector, New Mexico; The Strauss Collection; and Property from the Collection of Fern M. Schad. In each case, the enthusiasm and brilliance of the individual collectors’ eye is captured in masterpieces by today’s most sought-after artists including August Sander, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Harry Callahan, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, Robert Adams, Tina Barney, Vik Muniz, Adam Fuss and Louise Lawler to name a few. These collectors were highly selective in their choices, concentrating on the strength of the images, their historical importance and placement in the artist oeuvre as well as connoisseurship. All these issues continue to be at the center of today’s market, making the April 27th and 28th sales events not to be missed by anyone intrigued with photography’s long range of imagery and expressive force.
