Maps, Views, Lettersheets of San Francisco
PBA Galleries
An important assemblage of graphic and cartographic material relating to San Francisco, California. Formed over a lifetime of scholarship and collecting, the Fracchia Collection presents a vivid and revealing study of the founding and growth of the leading city on the West Coast of the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Maps and views of the entire city, from its infancy to the years of rebuilding after the devastating earthquake, are supplemented with granular cadastral maps of its famous neighborhoods as they were carved up and sold off to investors and home-buyers. The large selection of pictorial letter sheets, graphic portrayals of San Francisco in the wild days of the Gold Rush, capture its amazing growth from outpost to metropolis in a few short years, and the incumbent trials and tribulations.
