Rago Modern Auction Weekend

John Sollo and David Rago proudly present a Sollo: Rago Modern Auction on October 25 and 26. It includes over 60 pieces of furniture by George Nakashima, the majority from the original owners, as well as a large collection of his lighting. Wendell Castle is featured with 15-20 pieces, including a pair of sculpture-front doors from 1976, two rare chairs, a stack-laminated Executive desk, plus an amazing Post-modern bench from 1993. The auction offers the work of Albert Paley, a genius in metalwork: a monumental copper-plated steel fireplace hood, a bronze wall relief, and more. Charles Stendig is represented by a rare and important "Safari" modular sofa. Many custom-designed pieces of James Mont furniture from a private collection are being offered. Highlights include a table lamp with brushed bronze finish, upholstered chairs, a coffee table, two cabinets, a stepped buffet, and a dining table with an exceptional white marble top on a pedestal base with four caryatids. Two of the most unusual pieces in the auction are a fine and rare Finn Juhl "Chieftain" chair and a prototypical Isamu Noguchi rocking stool from the personal collection of a former Knoll executive. A large selection of Vladimir Kagan includes a biomorphic rocker and ottoman and a vintage "Unicorn" sofa, newly-upholstered. Among the Paul Evans pieces: a sculpture-front buffet and a large Argente welded aluminum pinwheel sculpture. Another highlight is a very rare Hagenauer life-size sculpture of a waiter, in brass, which once stood in the entrance of Henri Bendel's. Among many notable pieces by Harry Bertoia is an exceptionally-rare, signed and dated woodcut print on rice paper. The sale also includes work by Phil Powell, one of Bucks County's most noteworthy designers; a rare Hans Wegner chaise lounge; several fine Tommi Parzinger pieces; an exceptionally large Richard DeVore stoneware vase; two Peter Voulkos stoneware chargers; Maria Pergay floor lamps; and a selection of Beatrice Wood tableware. Saturday evening will feature an impressive selection of Bauhaus ephemera and books, over 100 lots from a single-owner collection with many rare and hard-to-find works on 20th century furniture and decorative arts, architectural and interior design, the majority of volumes first or only editions.
