20th Century Design

Furniture of the American craft movement spearheads the Fall 20th Century Design sale.
George Nakashima is so familiar to the press that he's practically a household name and Freeman's has yet another grouping of his furniture. A fine and rare pair of Conoid lounge chairs may be one of Nakashima's most sophisticated designs, combining strong horizontal and vertical lines for a powerful design that belies a balanced Japanese aesthetic. Another exceptional lot is a magnificent floating wall shelf, 9 fi feet in length, made of one solid piece of American black walnut. A variety of Nakashima case pieces, chairs and tables rounds out a solid showing of his work. Lesser-known names of the studio furniture genre are rapidly gaining recognition and Freeman's has a nice array of pieces by Dan Jackson, Robert Worth and Alphonse Mattia, to name a few.

As usual, there's a fine grouping of exquisite smalls to be sold at the November sale. A rare Tiffany Studios double student lamp with leaded glass shades gives off a soft almost intellectual glow when lit. Art glass by Durant and Steuben, Rookwood pottery and bold l'art nouveau pieces are sure to dazzle the eye with a kaleidoscope of colors and surfaces. Some silver pieces from the Wiener Werkstatte are gems of early modern design, pieces rarely seen in American showrooms.

And of course there's plenty of Modern furniture of the sort that people expect at a Freeman's design sale. Herman Miller pieces including an Eames compact sofa with original 1950s upholstery, a couple of Eames lounge chair sets and fiberglass shell chairs, a pristine grouping of George Nelson primavera wood furniture and the famous Noguchi coffee table will all be on the block. Knoll is well-represented with designs from Eero Saarinen, Mies and sculptor Harry Bertoia. Good Scandinavian furniture by Hans Wegner, Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen are characterized by sinuous lines, often bordering on the sensual.
