Inuit & First Nations | Feb 2025
First Arts Premiers Inc.
First Arts is pleased to announce our February 2025 online auction of Inuit & First Nations Art, closing Thursday, March 6th at 2:00 PM ET.
This sale features an exceptional selection of Northwest Coast works, spanning both contemporary and historic traditions. Among the contemporary highlights is Model Totem Pole of a Seated Bear (lot 29) by Henry Green, a finely crafted example of model carving. Also of note are Stan Wamiss?s striking Sisiutl Headdress with Thunderbird (lot 46) and Larry Rosso?s Chief's Raven Rattle with Human, Frog, and Kingfisher (1974, lot 47), each exemplifying the rich symbolic language of Northwest Coast art. Historic pieces include a 19th-century Bent Corner Bowl by a Haisla or Heiltsuk artist (lot 43), a finely carved Haida Feast Spoon (c. 1900, lot 44), and a rare Chilkat Child?s Robe (c. 1920, lot 45).
A standout in the sale is a painting by Norval Morrisseau, accompanied by a report from Morrisseau Art Consulting, Inc. Originally gifted to the spouse of the present collector, this work is a luminous example of Morrisseau?s signature style, where vibrant hues and interwoven forms express the Anishinaabe philosophy of interconnectedness in a dynamic, layered composition.
From the Inuit art section, Jessie Oonark?s The Great Hunter (lot 7) bridges her early drawings with her celebrated prints, preserving the distinctive aesthetic and narrative power that defined her career. Archer and Dog (lot 21) by Judas Ullulaq captures the sculptor?s early experimentation with mixed materials and his characteristic expressive forms?an approach that would cement his place as the leading artist of the Kitikmeot region. The sale also includes finely carved works from Kugaaruk, where generations of carvers have transformed local materials into intricate compositions that reflect the region?s deep connection to marine traditions.
Further highlights include striking Baker Lake wall hangings and an excellent selection of Inuit graphics.
