Art + Design

July 17th, Freeman’s | Hindman would like to welcome you to our Chicago Art + Design auction, a stunningly curated collection of 227 lots celebrating the wide-ranging flavors that define 20th and 21st-century artistry. A collaboration between our Post War and Contemporary Art and Design departments, the collection represents a vast array of mediums, including printmaking, sculpture, photography, furniture design, and art glass. Top billing includes artwork by Tom Blackwell, Damien Hirst, Leroy Neiman, and two fascinating leather works by Winfred Rembert. Observe a range of subjects across microcosmic and macrocosmic scales. From the introspective portrait photography of Hendrik Kerstens to the beach scenes of Massimo Vitali, to CRASH’s animated, graffiti-inspired works, the collection accommodates a broad scope of taste and intrigue. Ensuring the unique, mesmerizing makeup of this collection, we are excited to highlight works by Chicago artists like Karl Wirsum and Richard Hunt as well as examples by Roger Brown and Lee Godie directly from the respective artists' estates. We are particularly pleased to represent a collection of works by Sam Gilliam from the estate of William Weege, Gilliam's longtime friend and printer. Design highlights include sculptures by Albert Paley and Jun Kaneko, ceramics by Peter Voulkos and Richard Devore, and art glass by Dale Chihuly, with furniture examples by James Vilona and Charles and Ray Eames. Art + Design is an amalgamation of varying practices, styles, and the influences that inform them. Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, and Regionalism, to name just a few, all play a part in the creation of this playful, rhythmic, and dynamic project. The auction aims to explore the intersection between Art and Design, celebrating a range of mediums as they teeter between the figural, the abstract, and the architectonic.
