Prof. Russell Medical Instruments & Books

Kenneth Fitzpatrick Russell (1911-1987) was Professor of Anatomy and Medical History at the University of Melbourne. He became prosector in anatomy in 1932, graduated in medicine there in 1935, and was Stewart Lecturer in Anatomy in 1937. During WWII he served as a surgeon in Palestine, Tobruk, Syria and New Guinea. In 1969 he was awarded a personal Chair in Anatomy and Medical History. He had a passion for medical history in all its forms, especially books and instruments. He wrote extensively, often on items he had found, and in 1963 compiled his classic bibliography, 'British Anatomy 1525-1800' (second edition 1987). He established the Medical History Museum at University of Melbourne and was heavily involved with medical history and allied societies. Prof. Russell's 'Ex Libris Anatomica' bookplate (used for his anatomical books) is based on the title page of the 1493 edition of 'Anatomia' by Mondino dei Luzzi (c.1270-1326).
