Islamic & Indian Art

We are delighted to introduce our upcoming Islamic & Indian Art ft. ft. Indian Miniature Paintings & Rare Books from the Collection of a German Enthusiast auction taking place on Wednesday 10 December. The Islamic art section features excellent examples of Ottoman art (lots 1 -13) followed by Masterpieces of Islamic Art taking centre stage with a newly discovered Mamluk manuscript on Equine Medicine that has graced an English library since at least the late 19th century or early 20th century (lot 23), a rare Mamluk comb made for an Emir (lot 24) and three exceptional examples of early Islamic jewellery (lots 25, 26 and 27), and not least a rare and fine example of Mosul metalwork (lot 28) that was discovered at a flea market in the South of France. The Indian art section features 'The Collection of a German Enthusiast', beginning with rare reference books on Islamic and Indian art, followed by a collection of Indian miniature paintings collected over a period of 25 years, initially by accident, but then through pure passion, formed as a result of the attraction towards the lively colours and curious portraits. Highlights are many, and include a rare and early painting by the most influential and important painters at the court of Shah Tahmasp, ?Abd al-?Aziz (lot 37), early Mughal portraiture (lots 38-41), a stunning Polier album page (lot 45), a large and exciting Rajasthani painting that once belonged to the film producer, Ismail Merchant (lot 71) and some fine examples from the Punjab Hills (lots 72 and 73). The last section of Indian art cannot be forgotten, and highlights include two private collections ?The property of a Lady? (lots 79, 80 and 81) and ?A Private Somerset Collection? (lots 76, 88, 89, 90, 91 and 92) and some wonderful works of art with illustrious Indian noble pasts (lots 77 and 105). The sale finishes with a superb painting by the modern Indian art, B. Prabha (lot 109).
