Excellent Spring Antiques Auction
In our more than 37 years of business, we've been called countless times to sell the contents of closed antique shops, and it's not always something we're enthused about. In our experience, these calls often mean that a proprietor needs to sell the broken and/or uninteresting leftovers.
When, however, we received a call that Glaskowsky and Co. of Easthampton, MA was finally being liquidated, our question was not whether or not we were interested but how quickly we could get there. For years, we had hoped to receive this call.
Beginning in the 1940s, Nicholas and Marian Glaskowsky operated one of the largest and most active antique shops in Western New England. In 1947, they were a driving force in the formation of the Pioneer Valley Antique Dealers Association. They were frequent auction buyers at Eldred's in East Dennis, MA, Skinner's in Bolton, MA, and at Ken Miller's in Northfield, MA, where they were "front row regulars".
With the advancing age of Nicholas and the death of Marian in 1978, Glaskowsky & Co. shop hours became irregular. When Nicholas died a few years later, the business was bequeathed to their son, Fred, who had a "unique" approach to pricing. If an item failed to sell, he raised the price. His records indicate that he actually increased the price of many items five times. The combination of erratic shop hours and ever-escalating prices soon brought the flow of customers to a standstill.
Eventually, the Glaskowsky & Co. sign came down, and the shop has remained dormant and intact for more than 30 years, causing travelers along Route 10 in Easthampton to wonder what could possibly be going on behind those never-changing shop windows. Fred Glaskowsky, now 92 years old, requires medical care that necessitates complete liquidation after all these years.

Terms & Conditions
All bidders are responsible for reading, understanding, and abiding by the following terms and conditions at all auctions conducted by George Thomas Lewis & Company (hereafter referred to as The Auctioneer or The Auction House).
1. All property is sold 'as is', and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, or description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. The absence of any reference to the condition of a lot does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition, free from normal wear, imperfections or the effects of age.
2. Lots in this auction may be offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and The Auctioneer below which the lot will not be sold. A representative of The Auction House will execute such reserves by bidding on behalf of the consignor. Most items are offered without reserve. When reserves do exist, they are set at or below the estimated range. The Auction House, at its sole discretion, retains the right to reject any bid it deems not commensurate with the value of the item being offered.
3. Except as described in paragraph 2 above, the highest bidder, as determined by The Auctioneer, shall be the purchaser. The Auctioneer, at his sole discretion, may opt to reopen the bidding on a disputed lot or withdraw it from the auction. In the event of identical high bids between onsite and offsite bidders, the onsite bidder shall prevail. In the event of identical high absentee bids, the earliest received shall prevail.
4. Internet, telephone, and absentee bidders must register by returning the completed requisite forms 24 hours prior to the auction start time. The Auction House reserves the right to refuse anyone the right to register and participate at an auction. Forms are available at www.liveauctioneers.com and our website
5. The Auction House will use reasonable efforts to accurately execute telephone, absentee, and online bids. However, The Auction House assumes no liability for human error, equipment failure, inability to access the Internet, or software malfunctions related to the execution of absentee, telephone, or Internet bids.
6. ABSENTEE, TELEPHONE AND ONLINE PURCHASERS WILL PAY A BUYERS PREMIUM EQUAL TO 18% OF THE FINAL BID PRICE.
7. George Thomas Lewis & Company accepts cash (onsite only), bank wire transfers, (Postal) money orders, and checks. Checks will be accepted only if credit has been established prior to the auction date. The Auctioneer reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by check until the check has cleared the bank. GEORGE THOMAS LEWIS & COMPANY DOES NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL OR CREDIT CARDS. The purchaser agrees to pay a $25.00 charge for any returned check.
8. All purchasers are subject to the 6.25% Massachusetts sales tax unless the purchaser presents a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers from other states will be accepted if presented with a business card or business stationary. Purchases shipped or mailed outside of Massachusetts are exempt from Massachusetts sales tax.
9. Invoices will be sent to successful absentee, telephone, or Internet bidders the day after the auction. Payment is due within five days of receipt.
10. Packing and shipping of purchased items is the responsibility of the buyer. However, The Auctioneer will facilitate arrangements with a highly regarded shipper who will make direct contact with the buyer. Buyers who prefer to make their own pick-up or shipping arrangements should call ahead to make an appointment and receive directions. PURCHASED ITEMS WILL BE STORED AT A DIFFERENT LOCATION THAN THE AUCTION SITE. Purchases will not be released to a shipper without written authorization from the buyer.
11. Ivory, tortoise shell, and other materials from some endangered species can be subject to laws governing export from the United States. Securing permits for export of such material is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of export permits will not constitute grounds for cancellation of sale or delay in payment.
12. The liability of The Auction House to any purchaser with respect to any item will not exceed the actual price paid for that item.
13. Bidding on any item indicates the bidder's acceptance of these terms and all other terms announced at the time of the sale.
