Important Estates + Barbara & Sanford Orkin

Ahlers & Ogletree presents its Modern & Contemporary Art & Design Auction including the Estate of Barbara & Sanford Orkin, September 2 & 3, featuring fine art, studio glass, sculpture, furniture, lighting, and decorative arts. Highlights include Alex Katz's 'Wet Night' (1996), an original 1984 exhibition advertisement sketch by Keith Haring, and works by Sandy Skoglund, Rufino Tamayo, Purvis Young, and others. Studio glass features Lino Tagliapietra, Dale Chihuly, Harvey K. Littleton, Toots Zynsky, and others, alongside Glenna Goodacre's monumental bronze 'Wednesday'. Design includes Roche Bobois "Mah Jong" seating with Missoni and Kenzo Takada cushions and works by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, Harry Bertoia, Charles and Ray Eames, Gae Aulenti, Paul Evans, and others. More than 50 turned-wood works by Ed, Philip, and Matt Moulthrop celebrate one of Georgia's most important artistic legacies. At the heart of the auction is the Estate of Barbara and Sanford Orkin. Atlanta philanthropists, collectors, and patrons of the arts, the Orkins assembled a wide-ranging collection of fine art, art glass, sculpture, decorative arts, and design over their lives. Following his service during the Korean War, Sanford joined his family's pest control business and later served as president of Orkin Pest Control until its sale to Rollins, Inc. in 1964. Together, Barbara and Sanford devoted themselves to supporting education, healthcare, the arts, and Atlanta's Jewish community, with an especially meaningful commitment to their shared alma mater, the University of Georgia. Their philanthropy supported scholarships, academic programs, medical and scientific research, athletics, and the arts. Their enduring legacy at the University includes Sanford and Barbara Orkin Hall at the Terry College of Business and the Sanford and Barbara Orkin Gallery at the Georgia Museum of Art. Their collection reflects a lifelong engagement with the arts and a personal and discerning approach to collecting.
