Post-War & Contemporary Art

Freeman’s October 1st Post War & Contemporary Art auction is a creatively curated presentation of 98 lots of paintings, drawings and sculptures representing a diverse yet cohesive variety of works by significant 20th and 21st century makers. Leading lots include Alex Katz’ iconic Swimmer #2, 1973, an active portrait of the artist’s son Vincent reemerging after 50 years in a private collection; Gertude Abercrombie’s dazzlingly precise Alderman Merriam’s Shells, one of her earliest explorations of her meaningful and oft repeated shell motif that was fascinatingly recently rediscovered at an estate sale; and a pair of Alice Neel courtroom portraits of Judge Harold Medina, that bravely spoke truth to power at the height of the Red Scare and once again feel alarmingly relevant. Larger collections of importance also on offer are a striking selection of sculptural deaccession from the Collection of the Brooklyn Museum anchored by a charming quartet of Henry Moore bronze maquettes; property from the Rosenthal collection, that originated with New York Central Art Supply Company owner Louis Rosenthal, highlighted by stunning abstracts by Mary Abbott, Alice Baber, Milton Resnick and Esteban Vicente all of whom formed lasting friendships with their trusted material purveyor at times trading works for supples; a compelling group of provocative figuration by the likes of Gerard Garouste, Komar & Melamid amongst other from the Collection of Mauricio Quintana and Elsa Aguer. Also deserving attention are exceptional abstract examples by Ross Bleckner, Paul Feeley, Sherron Francis, Paul Jenkins, David Reed, Theodoros Stamos and Kenneth Victor Young, elegantly balanced by noteworthy narrative and representational imaginings by Radcliffe Bailey, Cosima von Bonin, Roger Brown, Marin Eder, Chris Offili, Ed Paschke, Joyce Pensato, Arnaldo Roche Rabbel, Chico da Silva and Joan Snyder.
