March Modern Auction Weekend

A catalogue of important pieces of modern design spanning the 20th Century.
Works by George Nakashima, include three Minguren pieces from the original owner; an assortment of Nakashima side tables, including one in rare rosewood; a Nakashima Long Chair with free-edge arm, purchased directly from Nakashima Studios in the 1950s, and appearing for the first time at auction; and a fine, custom designed pedestal/table with English walnut top and solid rosewood base consigned by the original owner and accompanied by Nakashima’s original drawing for the piece.
Excellent examples of mid-century modern design will be represented, featuring a George Nelson Coconut chair and a Marshmallow sofa upholstered in vintage Alexander Girard fabric. Pieces by Charles and Ray Eames and Edward Wormley for Dunbar will be offered as well as Deco metal and numerous pieces of modern ceramics by Natzler, Beatrice Wood and Toshiko Takaezu. Also included will be an exceptional collection of Funk Pottery believed to one of the most comprehensive collections to ever come to auction. It features the works of Richard Shaw, Clayton Bailey, Robert Hudson and Howard Kottler.
From the estate of a longtime Knoll executive come several rare and unusual Knoll pieces will be auctioned, as well as a number of early Harry Bertoia sculptures, including a steel and bronze floor sculpture from the Knoll showroom in New York City, two outdoor balancing sculptures and several wire and metal hanging sculptures. Bertoia gave a number of these pieces as gifts to the consignor, who was a close personal friend as well as a Knoll associate. Of equal importance in this collection will be an amazing offering of a number of historically important drawings and blueprints for Isamu Noguchi designs, including his Rocking Stool and a sculptured table designed for Knoll that never went into production. "This find helps to chronicle the history of modern design. It is like touching a part of history," announces John Sollo.
Among the Art Deco furniture in the auction will be a number of pieces by Gilbert Rohde, including an extension dining table, a set of six chairs, two rosewood veneer and laminated chests of drawers, and a rare upholstered lounge chair, all purchased from the estate of the original owner who acquired the items in 1936. American chrome from Howell, Lloyd and Troy Sunshade Company and the work of Gio Ponti add to the eclectic flavor of the auction.
Impressive pieces of Vladimir Kagan from his "organic era" will be offered for sale. Among the Kagan designs will be a fine collection of cherry furniture, which includes a two-door cabinet with fitted interior, and a rare "Cloud" sofa. A strong selection of modern lighting features Maria Pergay and early French lighting along with Arteluce and Arredoluce floor lamps.
For James Mont enthusiasts, pieces being auctioned include two early and unusual chests in tiger maple veneer, an oversized gold leaf mirror, and a two-door lacquered cabinet in the Chinese style with patchwork veneer doors, as well as a buffet and break-front in ebonized pickled oak veneer and a chaise lounge with a platform base.
Sunday will feature a collection of work by Shizuhiko Watanabe who was a student of George Nakashima in the late 1960’s. He studied furniture design in Denmark and was an instructor at the Parsons School of Design. His hand-made designs reflect both influences.
Also featured on Sunday will be a collection of Chase metal, more Deco by Rohde, Wolfgang Hoffmann and designs by Eames and Nelson along with many pieces of pottery, glass and Scandinavian furniture by a wide range of designers.
