Judith Binney and Sebastian Black Collection
ART+OBJECT is proud to be presenting the collection and estate of prominent Auckland couple Dame Judith Te Tomairangi o Te Aroha Binney and Sebastian Black. Binney and Black were both greatly respected academics whom had long relationships with The University of Auckland. Black was Deputy Head of the English Department for a number of years whilst Binney was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2006 and in 2010 won the NZ Post Book of the Year for Encircled Lands: Te Urewera 1820?1921, a landmark volume considered by many to be the most important book on Maori?Pakeha relations to be published. Tuhoe bestowed upon her the name Te Tomairangi o Te Aroha ( ?the little rain of love?) in 2009. Binney also served on the boards of Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, the Historic Places Trust and Creative New Zealand.
Proceeds from the sale will contribute towards the establishment of the ?Judith Te Tomairangi o Te Aroha trust? at the Royal Society of New Zealand (RSNZ), where she was one of the first historians to be elected as a fellow. The aim of the trust is to establish prestigious and well-funded fellowships for scholars working on any aspect of Aotearoa/New Zealand history.
