James Mills was a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press. After joining the AP in 1905 he traveled extensively throughout Europe, Russia and Asia. He reached Bombay in 1930 and from 1931 to 1932 he traveled with Mahatma Gandhi. The two reportedly shared a special rapport and during this time Gandhi allowed him to shoot housands of feet of film and still photographs. His extensive coverage was seen in multiple US newspapers and magazines. Many of his Gandhi photos are still used in media today. In 1935 Mills, along with Sir Percival Phillips of the London Daily Telegraph, covered the start of the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, becoming the first to be dubbed war correspondents. Jim Mills died in 1942 and this collection remained with family members until now.
