Craftsman Auctions - David Rago & Jerry Cohen

David Rago Auctions proudly presents its Craftsman Auction to be held on January 15/16, 2005 at the Rago Arts and Auction Center, starting noon each day. The high-end Arts & Crafts sale features many important pieces of art pottery, tiles, furniture and a strong selection of art glass. Sure to be the highlight is the Harvey Ellis inlaid table that is one of the rarest of all designed inlaid pieces. In May, 1903, Harvey Ellis, a Rochester, NY architect, was employed by Gustav Stickley as a designer, illustrator, and architect. Ellis had been the founding President of the Rochester Arts & Crafts Society in 1897 and was extremely familiar with the Arts & Crafts furniture being designed in both America and Europe. Ellis was brilliantly able to combine the lighter lines and Art Noveau flourishes of the European designers with Gustav Stickley's rectilinear designs and transform them into some of the finest objects produced during Stickley's reign as the leading proponent and manufacturer of American Arts & Crafts furniture. Ellis worked for Stickley for a scant half year before his untimely death in January of 1904 and, as a result, his inlaid furniture never made it into general production. The limited number of examples that survived have worked their way into the most prominent private and museum collections. Stunning pieces of art pottery being offered include George Ohr, Newcomb College, Teco, Rookwood, Fulper and Roycroft as well as an outstanding selection of tiles such as Rookwood, Grueby, Harris Strong, DePorceleyne Fles and others. Two exceptional tiles being featured include a fine and rare 8" Rookwood tile with a tree medallion in matte green and brown glaze and a desirable, rare Franklin vertical panel measuring 13 1/2" x 9" excised with a Northern scene of moose and Canadian geese in black silhouette against a yellow ground. The auction will take place at Rago Arts and Auction Center, 333 North Main Street, Lambertville, New Jersey. Previews will be January 8-14 from 12-5 p.m. and January 15-16 from 9-12 noon. Bid by absentee, telephone, in the room or online. For more information, call 609-397-9374 or email info@ragoarts.com.
