The Post War and Contemporary Art auction is comprised of 73 lots of paintings, sculptures and works on paper with impactful examples by of the moment artists Ernie Barnes, Fred Eversley and Nathaniel Mary Quinn the headlining offerings of the day. Large scale abstract painting by Giorgio Cavallon, Gene Davis, Ron Davis, Friedel Dzubas, Suzann Frecon and Paul Jenkins lead the charge of nonobjective works in the sale. The sculpture session is anchored by inventive monumental forms by Jonathan Borofsky, John Buck, Viola Frey and Clement Meadmore, also of note in three dimension is a smaller than life Deborah Butterfield mud and twig horse. Varied approaches to portraiture also standout in the sale with the diverse imaginings of Leon Golub, Arnulf Rainer, Andy Warhol and John Wilde attractively complimenting the unique stylized figuration of the aforementioned Barnes and Quinn. No Hindman Post War and Contemporary sale would be complete without important works by the Chicago Imagists, exceptional 1970s works by Roger Brown and Ray Yoshida highlight the hometown presentation, Brown’s 1973 Sportsman’s Trophy significantly once belonged to fellow False Image members Phil Hanson and Christina Ramberg.
