ORIGINAL WORKS BY HASSAM, MATISSE, PEALE AND OTHERS
TO HIGHLIGHT JAN. 7 LIVING ESTATE SALE IN LOGANVILLE, GA.
(Loganville, GA) – Five original oil paintings by Fredericke Childe Hassam, a signed and numbered wood block by Henri Matisse, an original oil on canvas by the renowned portrait artist Rembrandt Peale and numerous other important works of art will be put up for bid at the living estate sale of James C. Crawford, a longtime art collector and resident of Georgia. The sale will be held January 7th, at 2:00 pm, at Braxton's Antiques & Auctioneering in Loganville, Ga. Loganville is located between Atlanta and Athens, about 20 miles from the I-285 Atlanta Perimeter. Braxton's is at the intersection of Hwy. 78 and Main Street (Hwy. 20).
"This will be a tremendous sale, with more than 100 works of art being offered," said Braxton Roberts, owner of the auction house that bears his name. "Mr. Crawford was a serious art collector. Many of these pieces are museum quality and will become important additions to the bidders who are lucky enough to add them to their collections."
Roberts said about 30 of the works would be "high dollar" – fetching several thousands of dollars and up – while another 30 or so would probably sell in the mid-range. The rest – mainly prints and lithographs – would go for less than $1,000. "There will be something for just about everybody who loves art at this sale," he said. The centerpiece of the five Hassam paintings figures to be a watercolor titled "Four Doric Columned House." It is signed by the artist and measures 14-1/4" x 19-1/2". "A Hassam work very similar to 'Four Doric Columned House' sold at Sotheby's in 2002 for $174,500," Watson said. "It should be interesting to see how well this particular work does in light of that price, and due to the fact that Hassam is very hot right now."
