Silver & Plated Ware

Our highlights begin with some provincial pieces including Lot 380: a mid-nineteenth century Scottish provincial Fiddle pattern silver toddy ladle with initialled terminal, stamped WF PHD PHD for William Ferguson, Peterhead. Many Scottish silversmiths seldom sent their pieces to Edinburgh or Glasgow to be assayed, instead they often stamped their initials twice and would use their own town mark; this would either be an abbreviation of the town?s name, or an heraldic symbol synonymous with the town. Other highlights include Lot 130 - An Arts & Crafts silver sugar caster by Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr, the bellied form embossed with a Tudor rose border and inscribed 'Laughter Makes the Old World Gay & Young'. Ramsden and Carr set up a studio in Chelsea in 1898 and were known to have produced all manner of silverware, drawing influences from the Arts & Craft Movement. Other well-known makers include Lot 351 - a Georg Jensen silver Louvre footed bowl, model no. 19A, the circular bowl with moulded rim and raised above an openwork stem of stylised leaves and berries to a spread circular foot. Alongside Lot 354 - A nineteenth century American silver tazza by Tiffany & Co., the shallow bowl with personal name inscription to the underside and raised on three shell mounted hoof feet and triform plinth base. With the festive season upon us we are pleased to be offering over 200 novelties which would be perfect stocking fillers, including Lot 618 - A late Victorian silver and enamel vesta case by Sampson Mordan, with an enamelled horse racing scene to the front, or perhaps an early twentieth century German silver cigarette case of oblong form and enamel painted hinged cover depicting a nude female (Lot 535), or even a cased set of six modern silver menu holders, each depicting a different breed of dog (Lot 484).
